Thread: torque converter compatability

    torque converter compatability

I have an 87 Lancer turbo. The engine let go and I'm replacing it with a rebuilt engine from an 84. I changed the flywheel because the 84 needed a 6 bolt flywheel as opposed to the 8 bolt on the 87 engine. Now I found out the torque converter will not bolt to the flywheel because the 6 bolt flywheel uses 3 bolts as opposed to 4 bolts on the 8 bolt flywheel. Will a torque converter from an 84 work with an 87 trans? Thanks,Frank

    Re: torque converter compatability

    Frank,
That's always been a problem. Here's what you need to do. Use the '84 to '86 turbo convertor, 3 bolt and you will need to pull the transmission front pump out and change the pump gears to a set that has the "Dogs" instead of the "flats"

You will notice that the early convertor has slots cut in it and the later one has flats ground into it. This is why you need to swap the gears.

Any questions drop me an email to Mopartek@aol.com
