I wonder what tests they used back then to certify low production cars like this. Knowing what I do about composites (they typically don't take impact very well), it seems to me that if that thing took a 60mph hit to the nose from a non-movable wall it would have suffered quite a bit more damage. We also don't know the extent of the damage throughout the tub. Composites are very good at hiding very serious flaws. That's where non-destructive testing comes into play (ultrasonic, x-ray, ect.)
Now, I will admit that I don't know the construction of the tub. There are build methods that could in fact work very well. A good example: look at how the LMP cars did this year. They were going THROUGH the barriers!
