    rims and offset options....

    Hi guys,

I'm building an autocross car currently and am curios what rim sizes you guys have run. How much offset? Max width? I want to have all the info I can so I can maybe score a deal. I'm thinking I can score a deal on some 16 or 17 inch wheels, but want to know how wide and what offset I use.

    For a 90 Daytona.

    Nick

    Thanks

I have some 7" wheels on my Omni. They're TSW Stealth wheels. I don't think they're too light, but they're not bad compared to the stock wheels and they look great. If you're going to autocross the car seriously get the lightest wheels you can. Those are usually the smallest wheels which will clear your brakes.

Hey Nick, long time no talk, SDAC this year? Autocross eh, I'm far from the authority but have competed at a few events and usually gotten beat The best wheels for auto X are the lightest/widest ones you can find/fit to your car. Yes, 16's and 17's will fit a 3rd gen G body but 15's will be lighter (and that means faster) 15X8's in a 38 or 40 offset would be great IMO. I've got some 45 offset custom Roanal's on the yellow Masi but I had to run 3mm spacers to move them back out to clear the rear shocks so that was an experiment gone bust There are some pretty cheap 15" forged chinese rims on Ebay( I run them on the Rampage, there's pics in an old Rampage build thread here somewhere. a search of 15" forged should pull it up) but they are only 6.5, minimum I would recommend would be 7's. Motegi traklite forged are avail in a 5X100 pattern 15X7 with a 38 offset but they can be pretty spendy. Widest, lightest, smallest diameter you can fit are the best autocross wheel set ups...

I've run an 8" wide rim with 35mm ET (currently). 37/38 is probably the best fit, problem is there aren't a lot of options that are light and have that offset that I've seen. I'm running a wheel that is 15.6 lbs, which I consider to be the best I can get for the size and bolt pattern. Next weight up I've seen was about 20 lbs for a 17x7, which isn't bad at all and about the same weight as a stock 15x6 rim.

I'd definitely consider 16" rims too. Chris Still (sp?) was selling some 16" rims on here for a great price and they weighed less than mine, so you may want to look at running 16's.

    Re: rims and offset options....

I have a set of 15x7 wheels that are around 12 lbs each I use them for my drag slicks. I do have a full set. I was thinking that a taller wheel would be better but if a 15" rim will wrk good then I would rather just keep the wheels I have and get god tires for them.
I did find a set of 17x7s wheels with 37mm offset I was wondering if they would work, thats why I started this thread.

Sorry Alan no SDAC for me this year. I'm planning for next year with my Csxt. Lots of family vacation stuff this year, unless I hitch a ride with somenoe out there.

What are they Bear? 17x7 what? Those will work and probably be the best offset for the car. Mine are 35 and I had to roll the rear lip and still damaged a tire pretty bad.

tenzo dc5 wheels with 225 40 tires. they are actually 18x8s though with 37 mm offset. I don't think those are going to fit. HMM thought I found a good deal.
Got any recomendations on 225 50 autocross tire that has above 139 tread wear rating??

    Re: rims and offset options....

Yeah you start having overall diameter issues when you go that big. Personally, 16's or 17's is about the limit, some will say 16's. They can be overdone the smaller the car, but I personally would consider weight over all other options before I worried about size and color. I like the ones for my car, but really think a simple 5 spoke would look best on it. If I find other wheels that will work I may switch, but not for a while since I just got these. Granted, I'm running 5x4.5 bolt pattern now so my options exponentially grew!

Any thoughts on these 3 tires......Ventus RS3 hankook, toyo proxes R1R, BFG Rival,???? Looking at 225 45 15 sizes, they are all 140 or 200 treadwear tires. By weight they are 22,21, 20 lbs in same order.
