    Dyno-tuned my Dad's wagon today

I installed the 2.5 that I took out of my van that I ran 15 flat in into my Dad's wagon. Details of the car: '85 T&C wagon, 2.5 CB, forged .040 over pistons, self ported head, TU cast header, ceramic coated two-piece intake, stock T-II Shelby Garret turbo, 2.25" ported to 2.5" swing valve, 2.5" down pipe, 3" TU exhaust, flex-fuel injectors, LM/PM converted to SMEC, and FMIC.

The red lines are before and the blue lines are after. Dyno-tuning is the way to go. I'll tune on the street to get it close but from now on I'm going to fine tune on the dyno. Ya it's a little pricey but if you're not making modifications every other week, once you tune it you're done.

A413 automatic but I'm not sure what the final drive is. Probably something common. And 15 lbs of boost.

Interesting, thanks for sharing. Every 2.5 power curve I've seen so far peaks right at 5krpm.

Those are some decent gains! I'm sure that could be felt out on the road. I agree with doing a rough tune on the street and then spend an hour or two on the rollers; I picked up 100whp doing it that way.

How much of that gain was timing vs fuel? Pretty impressive any way you slice it!

It was all timing. I added a little fuel to WOT but not that much. My AFR was in the 11's.

Re: Dyno-tuned my Dad's wagon today

Your before and after results are very good, and ultimately thats what dynos are best at.

However, your absolute numbers are very low for 15psi, even considering the fairly wide range of readings the different kind of dynos give. You said your wot AFR ended up in a good place and you cant be too far down on timing since you got most of your power from adding it, so im not sure where any possible problem would be with the car. Are you sure those graphs are scaled properly?

Re: Dyno-tuned my Dad's wagon today

I figured it was probably timing, seems that's where the most dramatic gains come from...

Now to take it to the track (after weighing it) and we can see how much it is really putting down by calculating the weight and trap speed.

The transmission is probably eating up the power, but for the boost and mods, it still isn't bad.

Was the timing increase done through a flashable computer or turning the distributer? What was the before and after base timing if it was done through the distributer?

Going off of MPH, my bone stock save no cat and MP computer 89' TII daytona made right around 175HP.

Could it be that the auto is really eating up that much HP? I don't know.

Re: Dyno-tuned my Dad's wagon today

I dyno'd a 2.5 @16 psi with a 1pc intake and a <2.25" exhaust, and it still made 212whp... at 3700 rpm. If a motor is choking so bad and/or the setup is off by so much that it hits peak power 1000 rpm lower than stock, and it still made 50 more whp than this graph is showing at that rpm, i dont think you can attribute all of that to an auto trans.

I think these graphs might be scaled wrong. The shape of the curves looks completely normal for a stockish 2.5, and we already know it had good afr.. The only other explanation i can think of is that that dyno reads EXCEPTIONALLY low or had a goofy correction factor set up on it.

I was tuning it with an Ostrich (tune-on-the-fly chip) and MPTuner software.
