Realized I didn't have the rocker shaft tightened down properly when checking centerline, so I tightened it down and rechecked everything. Turns out the cam is bang on 106* ICL with stock gears. Max lift at the valve is .397".

Can't remember exactly. I can check on one of my stock heads sometime.

Got the right jam nuts today. Still has interference with the valve cover. More research ensuing.

Nope, that is about stock lift. His cams are made to have more duration without having clearance problems with the valvestem seal etc.

Do you know what the smallest clearance measurement (and what location) is? My coworker wants to make something with a jam nut on top but I am not very motivated to let him try because of your problems. I am still tempted to machine off some of the top of the rocker but I worry that will junk it.

If you already know the tightest spot and how tight it is, that would be great. I want to do putty tests but I don't see myself getting around to it and my coworker is very impatient. I thought he had forgot and now he is bugging me to bring him parts.

I'm gonna try and do some more on it this week or weekend. It holds the valve cover off the head about an 1/8 of an inch.

Re: Project LookOwt: Saving a piece of 3.0 history

Injectors sent. BTW, I think a spacer would be tough to seal up around the camshaft humps. I have plenty of room for spacers with a mitsubishi intake but I don't know about sealing. That spacer might also really suck to make.
I am a bit shocked that the stock lifters have so little space. Those "wrong" rockers had no problems but they are made with a much lower profile.
Anyone tempted to see if our rockers fail when the top is machined down? :P

Are there ding spots on the backside of the cover and is it hitting baffling or a single layer of outer material?

I dont see it being tough to seal, just that it would probably end up being thicker/taller than it "needed to be" to avoid it being super thin and fragile around the cam humps area. If we get all pie in the sky on it i can imagine cutting a groove in the bottom to accept the stock valve cover gasket and then it would seal easily on both sides without rtv. Even though it is 3d-printable i dont see such a thing being easy to get made because you'd need a 3d rendering of the shape of the valve cover/gasket to make it off of.

Re: Project LookOwt: Saving a piece of 3.0 history

I don't think the 3d printers that can do something that large are affordable. I know if I or someone traced out a drawing and measured it that my Father could do the rest quickly and convert it to a file that 3d printers used. I have not messed with CAD for years and would probably wasted a lot of time doing it myself. Might still be expensive because I don't know if they have to manually program the entire thing or how the printers work.

Is it possible to remove some material from the intake manifold to make it easier to install a spaced out valvecover?

There are definite ding marks on the inside of the cover. It's the inner liner, I'm pretty sure it can be cut out w/o issue. Question is will it give enough clearance.

Yeah lol... it's right in the corner, I'm gonna see if I can clearance it enough with my spare valve covers.

Brent I got the injectors today, thanks!

what about just cutting two valve covers apart with the band saw and welding back together like a 1/4 inch taller? just a thought...

That's probably more DIY-able than making a spacer. Unfortunately most of us would end up with something that looks like complete ----, but it wouldnt be HARD, just hard to make it presentable.

Made some progress on the rocker arm front. Looks like it may not be too bad to dimple the cover enough to clear.

    Hey, I demand videos!

I agree that it would be difficult to double valve cover and the Chrysler intake manifold makes it hard to install something taller. Mitsu intake manifolds do not have that problem. I think there is material you can remove without harm from the Chrysler intake manifold but probably not the first solution anyone wants.

And Rob, I hope we actually post some pictures soon of however things are going! Even failed stuff.

I wonder why the exhaust rocker on #6 looks so black compared to the others?
