I installed the transfer shaft and output shaft in my case and checked the end play. I started by using the original shims since I only replaced the bearings. The transfer shaft is 0.004" which is in spec. The output shaft also has about .004" of end play. My trans only had the large shim ( one with lube hole) and no other shims, I did not check the turning torque because I need to pick up a inch pound torque wrench ( cant find mine), but my understanding is this should have preload on the bearings anyway and I have end play. I dont understand the chart in the FSM or ATSG. The manuals want you to use 2 specific shims, check end play and use their chart to determine the correct shims. What I dont understand is if there is preload, why does the shim thickness go down as end play increases. I must be reading this wrong. How do you set this up? Unfortunately I did not check or endplay before pulling it apart.
Thanks!
