Question Best way to control boost?

I want to eventually (after the motor is broken-in and I have a new trans built) run 2 stages of boost. I want to run 15psi as an every-day mode, and then run 20psi or so + water/meth injection for fun. Now the water/meth I think could be turned on while in the car without changing anything else, but boost I will need to figure out something like a dual-stage boost controller so I don't have to fiddle with a g-valve. I would like to be able to stop at a light, flick 2 switches or push 2 buttons or whatever, and then I'm good to go.

I'm looking for an affordable 2-stage boost controller, either electronic or some type of self contained series of valves.

Please let me know what you guys would use to accomplish this!

P.S. when you use a g-valve inside the car does the air coming out of the tiny hole once you hit max boost make a loud whistle or is it mostly unnoticeable?

MBC is the way to go. I use a switch mounted to my shifter that gives me 4 levels of boost instantly. It is very cheap like any MBC out there should work great for you.

    Thanks

There is no logical reason to call an Engine a motor.

So by MBC you mean the g-valve style? or did you mean EBC?

You can do dual stage with no electronics also. You would use a switched solenoid valve.

Totally manual, old school, just simple bleeds, 6-12-18-24 psi. instantly at the flick of a switch. I wouldn't run anything else but my young pal speedfreek500 loves his EBC.

    Thanks
    Randy

Do you have any info on how you have this set up? A diagram or picture? I would love to see that, 4 stages sounds awesome.

Picture of the solenoids. I could run 5 levels with this setup but my switch only has 4 positions.

    Thanks

Awesome man, so you have 4 g-valves and whichever solenoid you have selected sends boost to the turbo through that valve and the other 3 are just closed?

Actual picture of speedfreeks EBC Omni.

His EBC is also pictured showing him behind the wheel.

You don't need 4 solenoids for 4 levels of boost, you can simply do it with 2 solenoids.
I have had 4 stages before but found I like having 3 better.
2 solenoids, 3 stages of boost.
The lowest setting ( both switches off) sends a boost signal directly to the wastegate can.
The second stage has a simple valve to bleed the signal (switch #1 on).
The high stage (switch #2, switch #1 off) sends the boost signal to the wastegate can with an inline g-valve. So no signal at all to the can until that g-valve setting is reached.

For diagrams there may be no better reference than the original reference... Gus' pages. Google "Gus Mahon Mean Mini" and it should be the top result. Look at his tech pages, he has plenty of MBC options. I use MBC on everything but my PT.

Keep it simple. 2 levels of boost. High and low. My low is 21psi. My high is 35. I really need to lower the high boost.

The difference between 15 and 20 is so little, I wonder if it's worth the hassle.

Its more about the drivability of the car, 20 is just a little too much for a summer daily driver. With my mods I will be getting about 8-10 hp per pound of boost, so 40-50 less HP can make a big difference. Our cars start to get a bit nutty at 20psi lol

Re: Best way to control boost?

I am planning on my R/T with a HE341 to use one of the solenoids on the passenger fender for my dual boost. Low boost will be what my waste gate can actuates at, normally 18 ish and High boost will be set by the closing the solenoid and routing it thru my MBC that I will set around 25 or how high I can run it safely. Run the wires for the solenoid back into the car to a switch next to the shifter. Should work well..

i did my 2 stage with 2 granger valves and one of the factory emissions solinoids "borrowed" from a junkyard car... total cost less than 20 bucks for it all... heres a diagram of the system...
