    Headlights going out!

Anyone have any ideas why the headlights randomly go out on a 1990 Dodge Shadow C/S?

Brand new headlight housings, bulbs, headlight switch, dimmer switch, and checked and cleaned headlight ground. I have not checked all of the wiring. It would be nice to have a very good wiring diagram for the headlights!

Can you be a little more specific with your problem. I have been fighting a headlight problem on my 85 GLH.

Mine is only a problem if I try to use the fog lights, after about 20mins all the exterior lights go out and sometimes the dash. it will then come back on in about 10 secs then go back off. This will continue until I shut off the car for a while. Also if I dont turn the fog lights on it does not happen.

The last time it happened I was able to play around with the headlight switch and was pretty confident it was the cause of the problem. I plan on buying a new headlight switch and maybe running a relay for the headlights to help prevent this problem.

Let me know what you find.

I will be driving along and the headlights will just quit working. It's been awhile since I have driven the car but I think I could just turn the headlight switch off then back on and then they would work for awhile again

Was the plug melted for the headlight switch? Could still be a bad connection there.

Headlight relays are never a bad idea on these cars. Most of the cars from our era have issues with the headlight switches overheating, or just failing from fatigue. Relays take the load off of the switch and give the headlights much cleaner voltage.

Yea, I thought about rigging up a relay for the headlights.

Do it. I did that to my 90' Shadow and I can't believe the difference it made. I should have done it much sooner.

Did the same with my van. I now have comparable headlights to newer cars on the road.

+2 I use to go thru headlight switches all the time until I changed to running relays All old mopars use thin wire for everything.Take a walk in the Pick and pull and look at all the newer cars they have relays and heavy gauge wire on every circuit and grounds everywhere .
