    In-car TOB change ?

Is such an idea even possible ? For awhile now when the car is running, sitting in neutral and the clutch is released there is a muffled whirling sound, press clutch in and it goes away... Yeah I know input shaft bearing is possible but those arnt that old and I feel fairly confident there ok. Clutch bearing has just under 20k on it, sachs TBI clutch so no stupidly high clamping PP that could have overpowered the bearing and let to a shorter lifespan. probably should have

I was thinking more or less to pop the VSS out, undo the swaybar, undo the DS balljoint and remove axle. Get 4 long shoulder bolts and with the engine supported slide the tranmission over as far as possible on the 'rails'. Possible or am I dreaming ?

You may be able to, but I tried it once and couldn't come close. I'm fast enough at pulling the trans that for the work involved to sneak the TOB out I could drop the whole thing and be done with it.

Flywheel and pressure plate combine is 3 inches thick, in other words, you'll have to move trans at least 3 inches before you can see the end of the shaft. Never mind the TOB is locked by the clutch lever... I'd say you're dreaming.

It can be done. But, you are so close to having it ready to lower out of the car, drop it and save your skin.

...and realistically, a "muffled whirring sound" is probably quieter than a lot of functioning TOB's out there. Unless it is grinding, rattling or just plain not working I wouldn't mess with it.

I just pulled the trans on my GLHS using a trans jack and left the engine in. I did drop the k-frame, but on a P/G/AA/J/K you might be able to avoid that.
