    Arrow Thunking while braking.

    Hey Guys

I have an 89 voyager, and during braking (light or hard) I can hear and feel thunking through the brake pedal. I think it is coming from the front drivers side. It is a thunk for every rotation of the tire. There is no noise when accelerating or coasting. The front drivers brake also squeals under braking intermittently.

Any ideas on what may be causing this?

Well first check out your rotors, if they were sitting a while, you might have got a corrosion spot ate into them, or there was a manfacturing defect... or you've actually worn through to a thin patch...

But if all else seems well, the classic "hidden" cause is wear ridges on the caliper slides or possibly in the bore of the cylinder. What happens is the slide or the piston kind of clicks back and forth over the ridge. Then your pad wears down enough that it doesn't do it for a while, then after a couple of weeks might find another ridge. The cause is either calipers you've re-used too many times, or crappy remans that had virtually nothing done to them.

Oh also, you can get odd vibration under braking from loose tie rod ends, balljoints, and bushings, but you should notice clunks from them when cornering and accelerating also, but only the braking might make 'em shudder back and forward. Just something else to make sure you eliminate before throwing $$$ at it.

Check to make sure all of the clips are present and there. Those are meant to keep the pad from moving inside the bracket.
