    Complete early Maserati 16v engine

    SOLD

    Date: 04th February 2013
    Username: J&H Ryan
    Full Name:Ryan Gannon
    City, State, Zip:Livonia, MI 48154
    Contact: PM
    Price: $2200
Early Masi head and block. Not run or not run for long. Might be one of a kind according to Rick D and others. I thought that buying up some unique engines would keep me from buying a Challenger. It didn't, so these have to go. Comes as a complete longblock (though separated and the headbolts are MIA). Don't know anything about it other than the above.

It won't work. That is a pre-production engine. You could simulate it, but unless you redid a stock one completely it will only look similar in that it is red. The lettering is in different spots and so is the oil fill. This is the only pre-production head I've ever seen that has the hose adapter in the thermostat housing hole. All the rest have been missing that part.

I should add that this comes with the turbo. I have another complete short block for this as well if the buyer wanted two for just a little more $ (we're talking $200 more, not $1000)

So what's different about this one vs a production one? The valve cover (probably can't get a gasket for it), the water outlet (not a big deal), and the breathers on the side (which I think are cool)? If everything else is the same then it's not that big of a deal to get running and put into a car. There's a guy here who has one of these heads in his GLH. He was asking some turbo outlet questions about it. I can't remember his nick.

Might be able to go oldskool on the VC gasket, cut it out of cork and baste it with RTV.... though these days, there are a lot of products appearing made of high temperature silicone, i.e. bakeware, might have to hit a few trendy kitchen places, but you might find a cookie sheet, cooling sheet or cutting mat big enough to cut a gasket out of. I have a few pieces of silicone bakeware stashed, that turned up under my nose cheap (i.e. dollar store, yard sale) that are saved for gasket upgrades and custom jobs.... for smaller stuff though, haven't picked up anything big enough for a VC yet.

Also, some modern VC gaskets are metal core with a really soft rubber/silicone on, this means that if you can find one that matches the circumference (same length around) then you might be able to bend and tweak it to fit.

Re: Complete early Maserati 16v engine

Another thought, if you stuck a 180* thermostat in the motor, then you might be able to bend copper wire or a coathanger to shape of the valvecover, solder the ends together, and repeatedly coat it in plastidip until it's fairly thick. Guaranteed temperature resistance is only 200F though, and although some people have done valvecovers and intakes with it, it's kinda right on the edge.

Some of the new hi-tech goop they make probably doesn't even need a substrate to stick to. Just use the goop and call it good.

They may have made some but they aren't selling any yet. As far as the two gaskets being the same I can't tell from the pics.

They won't be. The preproduction heads also used different gaskets. They are thinner and only have one of the half-moons in them.

I believe testing is still going on for the TU repro gaskets. He updated the thread not too long ago.
