degrease and preheat till your spit sizzles on the pieces, then use a high quality high nickel content rod, in past ive knocked the flux off and tig welded with said rod.
harris makes a really good rod, i dont remember the part number but it's dubbed "super missle rod" ive had the best results with that. barring that standard mild steel mig wire and pre and post heat.

Constant heat required or get it hot, weld, get back to temp, weld?

ohh, arent i a jerk, preheat then weld while still hot, then apply heat in extending intervals post welding, each time post heating a little less so as to let the casting cool and rearrange grain structure enough to resist cracking once cooled.

I've used 308 filler rod on a garrett turbine housing to weld 304 SS to it. What kind of material are you welding to the housing?

I've been told to tack it with nickel rod, then iron powder/plasma fill/weld it, oven stabilize over night, then bring it down slowly the next day.

I'm not sure what kind of metal the casting is. Its just a regular looking garrett turbine housing and a stock manny. I have some nickel arc sticks. I'll scrape them down and try with that.

I mean what kind of material are you welding to the housing? The housing is cast steel and is of high quality if its a stock Garrett housing. I modified a stock swingvalve by welding on a 3" piece of mandrel bent tubing...on the advice from someone on this board (I don't recall who it was long time ago) I used a mig welder and plain old mild steel wire. It welded up just fine. That piece has been on my dd for over 5 years and buttload of miles. No problems whatsoever. There are pics of that housing on this site somewhere someone posted a thread asking about modified swingvalves and I posted a pic in that thread.
