If they'd had that venturi air filters, would have been a different story, lol.

Over-sold, but it would make more power over a straight-cut tube... I like the sub enclosure piece, especially if it was bumper mounted, so it didn't have to see the heat of the engine bay...

More ideas for finding/making a "half donut" to improve entry on a flat plate in the airbox or base of a cone filter if you can get it apart...
Rotational blow molded containers, used to be more common that they had a round half donut profile base, margarine tubs, ice cream tubs, bleach bottles etc, if you've got any "vintage" ones kicking around holding bolts or fluids, take a look at them. You may find new examples still.
If they're not rigid enough to use, you can use them as a mold for RTV, JB Weld, Body filler or something.... or... cut a profile, and sculpt in place, something not too runny... you can mix in talc as filler to make it more pasty.
Also you might get lucky finding some half round rubber trim that you can fix around it... if you find some plasticy stuff for edging chipboard, you could try heat to get it to bend.
Then, while you're in the dollar store, gawping at plastic goblets and vases, or "five and dime" type place, you might wanna go look at dog toys, rubber chew rings, or ringlike part of a rubber chew toy might work if you slice it in half. Or leave it whole if you're lucky enough to find a flared vase or beaker that jams into it perfectly, to extend above surface. Could look for kids Hoop-la and hoop toss games too, see if there's any "donut" hollow formed rings.
Theoretically you want a perfectly formed parabola, but since there's gonna be a quarter inch or so of compressible, and slightly variable boundary layer, anything that "eyeballs" as a nice progressive curve is probably gonna get you 99.9% of the performance of a perfectly formed shape... unless you're running at a significant fraction of sonic speed intake velocity, but then that's probably not your biggest problem. Remember theoretically, your valves and seats should be shaped like this too, but some people figured that 5 angles is so damn close to perfect it's not worth sweating over, and some others figure that 3 angles is real damn close to 5 if you use the right angles...

08-10 minivan airbox. The bellmouth is 3" across. Where the tube connects, is 3 3/4.
That's probably more for NVH than performance, though I'm guessing the nice contour is to help bring back what the neck down took away.

Possible since these minivans do not have resonance tubes like pretty much all other stock intakes.
Years ago I rented a garage and 2 doors down was a guy that invented an air filter that filtered oxygen out of the air (allowing only oxygen molecules to enter the combustion chamber). The test bed engine was a turbo diesel and the efficiency was off the hook. I lost track of the guy and he probably sold the patent to the oil companies and is living in Aruba now.

I'm finding some cheaper alternatives on ebay right now. I searched "velocity air filter" and came up with a few.
Also, Spectre sells the velocity stacks and filters.

This video has one HUGE GLARING misconception!!! Cotton gauze filters that use an oil in them will NOT cause a MAF to go bad... IF it is serviced correctly! Most people put too much oil on the filter after servicing it. That is when you have problems.
Another thing to consider...if you put a filter on that has less filtering area of the stock filter, what have you really gained? Even though the media might flow better, I have a hard time believing that a smaller filter will yield better power over stock. I stick to this: pick a filter that has as much, or more filter area than the stock filter.
The main thing I was pointing out was that a filter that most people would buy thinking it increased performance, in the case of these two cars, was a negligible gain, or in one case a loss.
I could be wrong though, since the video is from Australia, the air might swirl in the opposite of our air and negate the gains you'd normally see.

I don't claim to know a whole ton about engines, but imo if the stock setup is not a restriction, a cold air intake wont make any more peak power. Also note in the video they only compared peak hp.
