    newbi questions

Ok, I know about the Logic module and the Power module but is the power module supposed to be opened to the open air without any filter? Can the PM be bypassed? This is on an 86 glht that we bought from roachejuice. The LM has a FWD sticker on it, looks like it says Harauhty 87 s5. Im assuming it is a 87 LM for a turbo Omni. Just trying to figure out what I have. How do you tell the LM from the SMEC. Other than this, I have got the intake and exhaust gaskets (for the hybrid engine) and purchased a BOV I think will work. Now I am trying to figure out the wastegate actuator (hx35) (what to use?) Have the intercooler mostly figured out (location wise). Need to get some poly mounts for the engine I think. Wondering if the stock computer will be useable on the setup or if it would be easier to go with megasquirt. This is going to be quite an involved project I think. Need to reroute wiring harness and check all the wiring to make sure of the connections. I am lookin for a different radiator that could work better with the Hybrid head. Wow, this can get quite involved but I want to do things correctly. THX!!

    Re: newbi questions

I'm not the expert, but hope I can give you some clues to kick you off before the smart guys get time to look and respond.

The logic module has all the smarts in it, the microcontroller, the EPROM with the callibration (Programming) and is low voltage/low current. The power module, takes the 5v signals and has drivers to drive/switch high current, and 12V actuators and/or relays. It also handles voltage regulation. Basically, you can delete the power module, by building a replica of the power module ... 'coz you need it to drive all the solenoids, injectors etc. Certain parts may be bypassed, like with an external voltage regulator for the alternator, only recommended if the one in the LM blows out or is suspected damaged.

The SMEC is in later cars, and has the LM and PM combined into one handy dandy lump, hence the name, Single Module Engine Controller. Later still, they got it all on the same circuit board and called it the Single Board Engine Controller.

I am gonna guess that the label on your LM indicates a custom Stage 5 tune. You may need +40% or +60% injectors for it.

Unless you are very familiar with MegaSquirt, the programming for the 2.2/2.5 computers is very well figured out, and you can tune in pretty much anything with them, so it wouldn't be worth "sidegrading" to MS, unless you've got half the kit for that, and would have to buy every stock part to get the stock stuff working.

Think a couple of people are using civic radiators.

Poke around that site, it's a goldmine.
Might have linked it under another URL recently, but looks like he just re-organised his hosting, so only seems to work with that domain name now.

the injectors for that car are 85lb injectors. The lm I gave you is just a fwd stage 5 cal. It goes in the passenger side kick panel. You'll need a different cal for that hybrid setup. The lm is socketed so all you'll have to do is swap the chip. The power module is under the hood. It doesn't need tuned or anything. I completely forgot to give you the front motor mount set up. I'll have to ship it to ya.

    Re: newbi questions

thanx for quick response. Hey Brandon, how ya doin. roadwarrior222, also goodmornin'. Ok, I was just wondering. I seem to remember my 1985 lebaron had the PM on the inner fender but I never really looked at it too close. You would think that it would have a filter but I guess the inlet is kinda blocked off from direct air flow. The one on the OMNI looks somewhat dirty on the inside. Im assuming they're fairly rugged. I guess the LM would be the more important item of the 2. Brandon, I'll pm ya with address. Really appreciate it. I was thinkin' that there was a mount for the front.

The power module (by the battery) has all the important stuff embedded in a potting compound. Even if it gets damp on the inside, no harm done. Dirt is the norm. Both LM & PM are required. If you tried powering coil & injectors off the LM it would fry before the engine ever kicked. It's just how it works.
