    Shifter cable snapped

91 Lebaron with a568. My "forward-back" cable snapped tonight, right at the actuator on the transmission. After tearing out all of the air hoses under the hood so I could reach it I jammed it into a random gear which miraculously happened to be 3rd allowing me to limp it home (possibly blowing more red lights than I have in my previous 28 years)...

Question. Will the cable on FWD's website for Shadow/Spirit work for me? That's the only place I can find that has cables at all, but I would assume the Lebaron/Daytona might be a bit longer. But this is my DD and I need it on the road ASAP. My VW bus doesn't like to start when it's under 20 degrees!

    Re: Shifter cable snapped

It may be a bit shorter than the J/G body cable, but I'm fairly sure it would work. You might call FWDP and see if they know.

Rock Auto, Auto Zone and OReilly all sell shifter cables. You have to cross reference them to make sure you are getting the right ones, but they are listed on the websites.

The only ones I could find are for automatics at RA and part stores. The dealer can order it for $125, I don't think bother replacing the crossover cable at the same time since it is just as old but doesn't see the same force.

It will work, might be a tad longer or shorter but work. If you can get OE cables for $125, go that route, the aftermarket ones are available but junk.

If you buy one of the aftermarket ones be preparred for it to break on the first drive. I've yet to find an aftermarket one hold up better than the 20 year old junkyard parts.

    Re: Shifter cable snapped

We'll see when they show up. I went ahead and ordered both of them, from the Dodge dealer so they should hopefully be OEM. But I went through a guy I know that gets a discount with them so he did the ordering for me. Supposed to be here in three days (from Friday).

Just out of curiosity would TBI cables be different? If so why? People swap to 523's all the time which came in TBI cars, I don't see why a turbo would need a different cable?

I don't know why they would be different? 523/568 are the same for shifting. Maybe the turbo ones had a higher temp jacket?

    Re: Shifter cable snapped

I installed the selector cable today, works like a champ. P/N on the receipt is 4446858. The crossover I got is 4504338 which I didn't end up installing...the only reason I ordered both was that I remembered one being burnt through the shielding to the cable from being too close to the exhaust. Turns out it was the one that failed anyway, unrelated though since it sheared off way up by the transmission.

    Re: Shifter cable snapped

The crossover came packaged in a "Mopar" labeled cardboard box, with 4504338 on it (which matches the table above). The other one was just taped up. The sticker attached to it has a few numbers, 25034000, LBL4063G56... But the p/n is 4446858.

Curious, what made it so angry? Did it get jail time or did you use the insanity plea.

I think I was granny shifting too much and forgetting to double clutch. Serves me right.

That's always fun, back in the day I had a car with a molded ball and socket linkage, that had a tendency to pop off every so often, had to drive home in 3rd several times.
