    87 glhs #820

Some of you might know that I recently picked up 168GLHS1986 (Mike's) 87 GLHS.

Anyway...I've been eyeing up the car since he let me drive it back in November...finally got a hold of it...and I love it. My first RUNNING turbo 2.2, and the first one I've driven.

I've had SRT4s before, but there's nothing similar besides the FWD aspect.

New performance cars are smooth, linear in their power delivery, and predictable whilst the accelerator is pressed. Older performance cars are violent. Whether a turbo Mopar, or big block muscle, once the turbo is spooled or the secondaries open up, hold on to the wheel for dear life. You'll need it to peel yourself out of the seat to grab the next gear.

That's a big reason why I love it. Honestly hard to believe it only ran a 13.4...then again, it is a go kart, so, probably acts and feels much faster...haha.

I'd like to put it on the dyno before I mess with anything on it and run it down the track myself once, just to see.

But, for those who don't know...here's what its got as per Mike's for sale ad...plus running on Stage II computer with an MSD 6al.

Miles unknown but limited miles on fully built Forward Motion Stage V car.
FM E2 block with forged internals, Forged JE Pistons,
    CNC Head +1 valves,
    FM E2 Turbo
    Precision Intercooler,
    Stock Radiator,
Ported stock intake and exhaust manifold.
568 Trans with Fidanza short throw shifter.
KONI COILOVERS with eibach springs in

I plan on changing a few things and cleaning a few things up. Got the heater and defroster/defogger working. Put a stereo back in it, and am more or less putting the interior back together. I have another set of wheels I'm putting on it, getting the GLHS stickers for it, etc. I'd like to do the SLH upgrade like I did to my Omni as well with the van front and rear disc brakes.

Maybe, whenever I feel it gets slow I'll do the stage 5 conversion. Supposedly a 3 bar map, +40s, a stage 5 ecu, and a few wiring changes and it'd be a very powerful little machine.

But, I've been driving the hell out of it. Between yesterday and today I've put over 250 miles on it. Running great! I've been watching the gauges like a hawk and all has been perfect.

Ok...enough of my speal...here's some pictures I took last night. I'll post some all along the build process. I know its already built, but of course I want to do my own thing and finish some things up. And throw my "I get mine from Direct Connection" license plate frame on it GLHS #820 is in good hands.

Im so glad its in great hands. Ive never seen it that clean before. Drive the rubber off that car and enjoy every mile. Your so right about the violent thrust as to what makes these cars fun.

The car only runs 13.4 because boost is set @ 13 to 14 lbs.

The first thing i woud do is buy a wideband and monitor af ratio. The car is fast from 0-60 then runs out of gas on the top end due o +20's and stage 2 computer.

Do not turn the boost up until you can put a 3bar setup with stage v computer and +40's in there.

With the current setup the boost seems to be happy right where it is!

Keep me posted and maybe put those bad mofo wheels on this car and lower it a little. They woud look incredible against the black paint.

Glad you got the heater working already your gonna need that as you drive it through the winter.

I like the wheels you have on it.

As far as an SRT-4 vs old school 2.2/2.5, the power delivery difference you're feeling is due in part to 8v vs 16v. I can say this since I regularly drive my GLHS, R/T, and SRT-4, the power delivery on the SRT-4 is very similar to the R/T, esp since both are 16v w/ small turbos. The GLHS, being 8v, has more grunt in the lower RPMs and the Garrett is a much bigger turbo than on an SRT-4. I know that my GLHS at 17psi feels much more violent than my SRT-4.

Looks great! Inspiring me to get to work on mine! Btw there is a working GLHS Turbonator tune now, so you can tune it yourself, just have to have both chips socketed. I can help you with the cal if you decide to do that. Be much better than any "canned" cal, stage v or not

Good looking 87 It's suprising how diffrent they look without the S car graphics. Our 95 One Lap car was solid black with no striping and I've loved the look ever since Listen to Mike tho, Easy on the boost till you have WB monitoring and more fuel

Thanks everyone! And don't worry about me messing with the boost. I'd like to get a wideband for it now, seems like it loses a little power up top so I haven't been running it that high in the rpms because of it. Not looking to blow it up. Lol.

And I like it without the graphics...but it is an "S" car...so I feel I'm committing a sin not putting them back on it...lol

The wheels that are on it are a good looking wheel, just to sunken in, and I'm not a big fan of spacers. The other wheels I have I'm sure you guys will like

    Force Fed...while that sounds awesome...it sounds expensive...haha.

But thanks again, everyone! Stay tuned as it goes through its changes! Putting the interior together today...will post some pics.

DIY socketing procedure is dirt cheap... but labor intensive, still, not all that expensive to get skilled hands to do it for you.

There is probably nothing wrong with it, what do you mean by high RPMS? 5500 or 6500? yours has a ported head i know but it is still an 8 valve and they don't breathe like the 16v cars do up top.

I think its like 50-75 bucks to have the chips socketed w/ZIF sockets by Shelgame. After that, it's only expensive if you get carried away with the timing lol.

Depending on how honest the tach is...like 6500. Stock tach though...lol

But that actually is damn cheap. I love these cars. Haha.

A buddy of mine has a Honda and just dumped $800 on K-pro so he can use different tunes. And I thought $400 for a programmer was bad.

This is good news despite the somewhat dubious music selection
