    L body wiring swap.

Ok guys I want to swap a newer harness and computer into my 85 GLH. My knowledge is lacking on the different ecu's and wiring. What is the best setup to go with in an omni? I have no problem and actually enjoy doing wiring and soldering and all that good stuff. I would like to swap in a fuse block as well. Gotta roam the junkyards to find a good one.

I want to stay away from seperate Lm and PM so 87 t2 is a no go. 89 t1 would be SMEC correct? Why smec over sbec? Is there a specific model to get the 89 harness from or does it not matter?

Easiest swap to do is from a minivan. From what i recall they share the same bulkhead connectors. Plus it is the easiest as far as lights go.

You may have to get an '88/'89 L-body dash harness for this (50 pin bulkhead connector) but it is in fact a direct plugin.

Correct you are, You will need to swap a few wires at the wiper motor.

Could I take the pins out of the minivan harness and put them in my current bulkhead connector?

You really dont need much to swap to SMEC, need the bulkhead then chop of anything not needed. Just wired a dunebuggy, really wasnt a big deal at all. I use to think it was a hassle, not so much anymore, plus IMO the smec pins are way better than the LM.....also I and others have had issues with ostrich emulator with some LM....that one I have yet to figure out. Why mess with anything interior..??...it isnt needed.

If he went with the 50 way van harness, he would. But that is the only reason I see.

89 turbo van engine harness, with 88/89 interior harness out of a omni horizon. Plug and play literally. Just swap wires at the wiper motor your done. You can use a 90 turbo van harness but would have to run 90 interior harness out of a omni along with all other associated parts interior wise. Cluster etc etc.

    Re: L body wiring swap.

Seems that 88-89 l body interior harnesses are hard to come by. I have an 89 turbovan smec harness. I'm thinking of chopping the 50 way connector off and soldering the Omni's 40 way connector on. I'm stripping everything off the harness that is not essential.

I don't know for sure, but the pins are probably the same in both blocks. You probably don't have to chop it up, just remove them and put them in the right spots in the other block.

I haven't looked at my Omni's connector yet. Even if they are not im pretty good with the solder and heat shrink. I have the van harness all stripped down and cleaned. Gonna try to find a fuse/relay block at the junkyard.

+1. The less you cut, the better you are for long term reliability.

IIRC they are both the standard 1/4" flat blade terminals.

    Re: L body wiring swap.

I know the majority of the wiring is the same. I think there are 2 or 3 extra things the van has that the omni does not. I have to check tomorrow. I have the connector pinouts for both along with complete wiring diagrams.

Is pin 41 on the 50 way connector the same as pin 11 on the 40 way? And what the hell is the fuel pacer lamp on the 40 way?
