Idle Speed Question; 89 Dodge Lancer Shelby Turbo II

Hi, it's me again. I have just one more issue to resolve before my car is PERFECT. The idle, once the engine is warmed up a bit, is right about 800 rpm. When I drive the car, however, as I accelerate and then begin to shift to the next gear, the idle stays at about 1500-2000 rpm for about 2 or 3 seconds (just long enough for me to have to make the shift at those higher rpms). If I put the clutch in and wait for 2-3 seconds the idle does, indeed, return to the 800 rpm range. The car is bone-stock except for a type 3 BOV that seems to be properly set up. Any ideas?

I did read the post entitled "Cold Idle Bouncing / Hunting" and got some ideas from that. The car has been sitting for about a year. I put a new fuel filter in it about a month ago and just started driving it last week. The filter may be full of gunk. Maybe that has got something to do with it. I will put in a new filter and see what happens.

That's normal for the idle to hang like that. It has to do with emmisions and supposedly makes driveability better for people that can't drive a stick.

The computer make it idle higher based on Vehicle speed, likeover 15 MPH or something. At least on the auto transmission cars. So I would say it is normal, it is to help make gear changes a bit better i would guess.

It's the AIS opening. It does it with vehicle speed, coolant temp and throttle position. As soon as you touch the throttle the AIS opens a bit too. Over 4-5mph it opens a bit. And it's obviously changes for your coolant. I've kept the AIS closed as much as possible in the calibration for vehicle speed and TPS settings on my Auto new yorker but it still moves a bit. On my 5spd cars I remove the pintle out of the AIS motor, and seal the passageway completely shut with Gorrilla glue then set the idle speed with the screw and bump the timing 2-4 degrees more when it's under 100 degrees engine temp in the calibration. Works great.

I've honestly never seen an auto do it.

GLHNSLHT2: "On my 5spd cars I remove the pintle out of the AIS motor, and seal the passageway completely shut with Gorrilla glue then set the idle speed with the screw and bump the timing 2-4 degrees more when it's under 100 degrees engine temp in the calibration." Where is the AIS motor? Also, I am assuming that the pintle is a pin, upon which something pivots. I should remove that, then seal the "passageway" (which sounds like some kind of opening that is created when the pintle is removed), then set the idle speed with the screw (pretty sure I can figure that out) and then bump the timing... How does one bump the timing? is the timing not managed by the computer somehow? How does one adjust this? Does it take a computer for access / read-out / action?

You can add timing by programming te computer but it would be easier to adjust the distributor with a timing light

Only do the mods I talked about if you have the ability to change the timing via the ECU. Because you only want to bump the timing in the cold timing table so it only does it when cold. You don't want more timing where you don't need it.

Unplugging the AIS works for about 2 weeks, then it slowly vibrates open and you have a higher idle.

If you can't tune the ECU then just live with how it controls idle.

Here is a link detailing how to properly adjust the base idle.

I would clean the TB with some carb cleaner down in the AIS passageway. 90% of the time I'm having high idle issues that's the cause.

My old '86 used to do that. Then I noticed the throttle return spring was missing. I put a new spring on, and it never did it again.
