    Immediate Tire Selection Help

I had a blow out on my CSX from a nasty hole in the road. I needed knew tires anyway. The CII on there now are 205/50/15 Kuhmo Ecsta ASX and they were not the greatest but where cheap. I have a spare set of empty 6.5" crabs. Here are my choices:

    Crabs w/ http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....omCompare1=yes

Those are supposed to have good straight line grip but suck for cornering relative to other tires, but the softer sidewall makes them ride comfier also.

Oh avoid nexen, they seem like a good deal at first but don't wear well.

Kumhos that are made in china are sucky compared to made in Korea ones.

---------- Post added at 09:39 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:35 PM ----------

Should be okay with 225s there, looks like they only make those in Korea, but the 205 is both, so hit and miss.

225s may rub slightly on full lock, you knew that right?

    Re: Immediate Tire Selection Help

You listed the BF tire twice.

I did a quick google search, both choices get good reviews, I like the Kumho on a GLHS but have no idea how they survived over the last few years. I do like Brian's choice too.

He listed it as a choice with crabs or centurion IIs, obviously he though the CII too narrow for a 225, but it's a 6.5" crab so...

The Kuhmo on the shadow should be fine, IMHO. They are good tires. Really, they both will do what you want.

    Re: Immediate Tire Selection Help

Personally I'd go for the Kumhos, but I'm not a big fan of BFG passenger tires. I did have the Kumho Ecsta Supras on my CSXT (nearly ten years ago, no longer made), and was very happy with those.

    Re: Immediate Tire Selection Help

I have had those exact BFG tires on the Lebaron for 2 years now, daily driven, and have been nothing but happy with them. They have wore extremely well, considering all the track time and street spinning I have done on them even now that they are almost due to be replaced, they still have decent wet grip, went to the mountains last weekend in the rain and was impressed with how hard I could go around a corner on them. I would much rather have them than the Kumhos, which wear out pretty quickly.

Also, FWIW I have run a 225/50/15 on Centurions on my GLHS with no problem in the front, rears needed a 1/8 spacer. I would not be afraid to run 215 BFG's on the CII's.

I've always been happy with Kuhmos, especially for the price.

Bfg kdw 2 ftw!!! That's gonna be my next tire more than likely.
Fwiw I bought a used set of those kuhmos you have listed there. Great grip on the other Omni. It spun a lot less than the other tires I had on there. They wear pretty good too. Dunno about cornering. Never did that with the other Omni.

    Frank
I have run both those Kuhmos and BFGs on a few cars now and The BFGs have outlasted the Kuhmos 2 to 1. These were on DDs with occasional burnouts. I would say the Kuhmos would hook up slightly better but all around I like the BFGs better. They were better in the wet as well. For a DD that I want the tires to last I would go BFGs. I will be getting another set of them in the spring myself.

    Re: Immediate Tire Selection Help

I'll have a hard time ever recommending an "All Season" tire for any performance oriented vehicle ever again. Too much of a compromise for any given driving condition.

As for the KDW2's, there were OE on my SRT-4. Couldn't wait to get rid of them. While they did stick well in cornering, that's pretty much all they did well. They were loud and they made the whole car vibrate, even with perfect balance checked on three different balance machines in two different shops. No defects to be found. I would say maybe it was my car that was the problem, but every set of tires I have had since has been issue free.

I have heard many good things about the Sport Comp 2 tho, and I may be picking up a set of those in the spring.

Depends on the tire, some can be run on a 6" rim. I am running 225/55R16's on my 6" GTC wheels and they are nice and flat.

Depends also how much sidewall you have to play with, 55% of 225 is quite a bit, 45 or 50, not so much.

    Re: Immediate Tire Selection Help

^very true. 225/55 is not too big a deal. 225/50 is borderline and 225/45 is just NO. In fact, if you look at the majority of people running 225/45s in turning racing (autox, road course etc) it's on a ~9" wide wheel.

I have nothing good to say about kumho AST so glad you didnt pick them!

Dont push the red button. You hear me?
