    G288 in my neon

Doing an srt swap into my 97 coupe, and considering options for a stout manual transmission. Not particularly building a "high power" setup, but like to start with quality parts. My plan was to use the A555 and maybe even the the final drive from a A520. Something different and cheaper than the NVT-850. Then find oit through web surfing that the manual gearbox in a turbo pt has a final drive of 3.29 and is also made by getrag. Scooped up one from the yard this past summer and have yet to mount it to anything. There seems to be little known about this manual transmission, at least where I have been looking. Has the tallest gears and thinking that an srt clutch should work in there, it would be pretty strong. Any one have anything informative on this?

    Why not an NVT350?

Maybe down towards the bottom where it lists torque capacity? http://www.neons.org/forumdodge/trans.htm

I don't know much about swapping an A-555 or A-520 style of tranny into a neon or bolting it up to a newer 2.0L or 2.4L engine, or even if the clutch pedal ratio is the same.

The tranny you got from the junkyard from the PT should have a tag with the model number on it, that should help determine just what you have.

What are the torque ratings of the 2.2/2.5 manual transmissions for comparison?

    Not sure, Mike.
I didn't even notice the model number in the title. I'm a twit. I'm sure the OP has already looked around for some info, and I can't find much either.

    Re: G288 in my neon

I could have sworn I've seen torque ratings for our transmissions someplace.

My question has been this for a long time: how is that rating determined?

It is obvious these trannies can take WAY more than they are *rated* for, and that seems to follow *most* manual transmissions.

    Re: G288 in my neon

I believe it's a constant torque input, without shock loading, for a sustained period of time before any noteable wear is detected. How else could you rate them?

Sure, they can take momentary loads above rated input, and nobody drives at constant max torque, so that's probably why they can seem to take more.

    G288?

I know the 350 can take a bit of abuse, there are a few locals with turbo'd Neon's driving around with no issues so far.

If you take apart a turbo trans vs an N/A 2.5 trans, they are pretty well the same except the older ones with a fine pitch on the ring and pinion.

I'm gonna run a T-350HD out of a '01 PT Cruiser behind the 2.4 turbo in my Daytona. My power goal is 450hp.

    Re: G288 in my neon

I did some digging on that transmission when I was looking at buying a used PT with a manual in it. they are supposed to be stronger than the 350 and also narrower to fit in the pt chassis, I got that off of one of the PT or SRT websites. Quaiffes were made and there are still some floating around on ebay for a pretty decent price.

Old thread but what was the plan with axles here? I don't see the 350 breaking with how weak the axles are. More to be said and spent then just the transmission.

Axles are the main issue. Will likely scrap the pt mtx and get a A555 for my srt swap. The NVT-350 is the typical go to mtx for most srt swapped 1G's, but will have more than stock and don't was to be replacing transmissions yearly. Have some performance parts from some wrecked cars, so hoping to get something put together later this year after school is done. Going n/a 2.4L just to prep the car for the boosted stuff.

I'm gonna be running a t350HD in my Daytona, supposedly there are several 450ish whp Neons runing those (albeit they are probably a lot lighter than the Daytona).

SRT4 swapped 1st gen here. 2000 T350-HD with a 3.55 Final drive. I have a combo of SRT axles and PT turbo automatic equal length axles.

You won't break a T350. The only thing I have seen happen is clutch straps comming apart and diff pins comming loose. Not an issue with a good clutch and diff pin saver tabs.

I can't imagine you are putting too much power through this trans if you feel this way because tons of people grenade the 350

And they either don't beat on them or rebuild/replace the trans often

If you want a stronger trans and insist on a manual why not convert to hydraulic and run the 850 a lot of aftermarket support for these and if you get an 04 or 05 factory lsd

    Define tons?

    2005 SRT4 with dsp at 16psi and 3" turbo back should be around 275hp and 300ft. lbs+.

I beat the crap out of it in autocross too.
