    Sound dampening material?

What are your experiences? This will not be for muffler noise. I plan to use some to dampen engine vibrations do to poly engine mounts.

    Re: Sound dampening material?

Here is what I am thinking about in order to tackle improving my ear comfort in the CSX:
    1. Replace the old carpet padding with something more up to date... probably closed cell Dynamat knock off
    2. Put something similar on the roof and door panels.
    3. Replace the hood liner (old one is falling apart anyway)
    4. When I repair my crack front cross member, seam weld it, and fill the cross member with a closed cell spray foam filler

I think #4 will play a huge roll in dampening engine noise/vibrations because of my Poly engine mounts. Depending on how it does, I may fill some more of the frame rails.

    Other ideas?

    Thanks,
    Frank

    Re: Sound dampening material?

I was thinking of doing the same to my Jeep. There is a lot of good information at the link below. How the different types of products work, how much you REALLY need to do the job.

    http://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi

I've also been shopping for carpet.
www.stockinteriors.com has good prices on carpet, and they offer a mass-backing which is good for sound deadening.

A recent trick i read about in HotRod is to put velcro behind interior trim to keep it from rattling.

    Re: Sound dampening material?

Interesting products! I think I am sold on what I need for over price and over rated Dynamat products. I wills till probably use the Dynamat hood liner for the nicer finish it offers but use that CLD tiles for the sheet metal surface of the hood, roof trunk, and doors. It is nice that you only need 25% coverage.

For my front frame member that the front motor mount translates vibration through, I am going to use PUR Black NF.

Thanks for the links. I have a '68 Dodge pickup with a 440, leaf spring suspension, and NO sound dampening (or insulation) in anything.

Thanks for confirming my post, when I add the extra roof braces on my Omni, I'm going to also spray foam the pillars etc.

    Thanks
    Randy

    Won't do much.
One GLH is full of dynamat and had all poly mounts. The dash vibrated like crazy at 3000 RPM until I changed out the poly dogbone for a rubber dogbone. Now it's quiet.
Another GLH has Lizard Skin sound control and Heat Control. The dash and interior plastics still buzz around 3000 RPM.

DynaMat and Lizard Skin deaden resonation in the body of the car and quiet exhaust noise, but the interior panels and dash are their own noise issue.

Be aware guys some of that hard drying expanding foam (like great stuff) has buckled body panels. Don't get carried away.

Yeah I was going to add earlier that I had early poly mounts in my GLHT and took them out because of the vibration. My understanding is Johnny made later batches with softer poly. Friend also had poly motor mounts in his 360 Gremlin (Jeep part). Took them out after a few days. That is another option to fight vibration. New motor mounts will last a long time.

Same here, the Lebaron has Dynamat on every interior panel, still has rattles and squeaks due to the poly bobble strut.

Is it possible to find new moulded hood insulation for 85 Dodge Chargers? jeff

    Re: Sound dampening material?

I haven't seen any molded ones. An NOS one is probably hte only chance of a molded pad.

I have one of therse on my Charger GLHS. Fits nice. Much better than nothing.

ajakeski, thanks for the tip, I bought one, not molded but nicely cut. Do you have a part number for the clips to hold it on?

    Re: Sound dampening material?

Has anybody had good luck with any inexpensive alternatives to the stereo-shop sound barriers?

I am going to be replacing the carpet in my Grand Cherokee and while I am at it, if there is anything I can put under there to make the ride a bit quieter, I'd like to give it a try. I've read about Dynapad and LuxuryLiner and stuff, but I can't see paying those proces for basically sheets of closed cell foam.

    Thanks,
