This is a 5 speed transmission mount from a early (this one from an 83) L-body. Is this type of mount needed when converting to a 5 speed in an early l body, or can a newer mount be used?

You can use that in a later Lbody as well. Looks like a MP mount in there. Also you can use that to run Johnny's Pass side poly mount on both sides. But you take the spacers out of the pass side and add them to the drivers side there to make the motor sit level since the Poly mount hole isn't in a stock place.
