People do it both ways. I prefer the bottom as I have a hoist. hook on either side of the head then you can angle it up and out.

OOPZ, Guess I should have added that you need a friend for the R&R on the hood. That and which engine are you playing with? The grab points are way different depending on the # of pistons
TIII is a b**** to pull out the top. I've done it twice and every time is was a constant fight.
I had to remove the trans mount bracket and front pulley and I literally had to power through almost bending stuff.

i was lucky through the top. Just keep the engine/trans at an angle trans pointed moredown. Slide transmission under mount then drop engine in. piece of cake I had to even do it one time cause i forgot to put my main seal in..... opppssssss
