What are the folks that are doing paint jobs in their home garage using for respiration? Going to attempt my own paint job on the horizon. any info on what you are using would be great. Thanks.

Big --- fan is number one. i think the only thing that is bad now is the clear coat? I used to spray nitrocellulose lacquer. Anything with a catalyst is bad to breath. I'm 68 and still kicking. 50 years of smoking, lived 6 months in welding gasses in the Navy, asbestos exposure, brake dust. I did live in an area with decent air quality.

The 3m Half Face respirator is all I have used for the past 20 years. Along with good ventilation. (big @$$ fan mentioned above.)
The clear coat has isocyanides, that's about the worst thing in modern paints. You don't want to breathe it in.
The rest of the bad stuff is particulate matter (overspray)
The majority of the toxins painters absorb into their bodies are absorbed through their eyes due to the blood vessels being so close to the surface.
I wouldn't be too worried about it unless you have a respitory problem. You've probably been exposed to worse in every day life.
Looks good..
However, test fit a few, make sure they don't leave gaping holes around your nose and chin/jaw... they tend to be "one size doesn't really fit all, but we'll pretend anyway"

what about the fan you guys are mentioning. Do you have a diameter you recommend? I was thinking of sitting the fan under the garage door and making a frame to close up the rest of the area. Plastic on the inside to create the spray booth. If the clears have isocyanates I'd need a full suit (like tyvek) as well correct? My understanding is that stuff is readily absorbed through the skin. I want to remove as much of the body panels as possible and paint them off the car. Any problems with doing two shoots one for the panels and then bringing the chassis in to shoot that on a separate occasion. Thanks for the info!
3M respirators come in S-XL sizes.
As for a fan, look for an old furnace blower.
A tyvek suit is more for keeping the dirt on your clothing out of your paint.
If you paint a piece at a time make sure you mix the paint the same each time, use the same gun and air pressure settings and use the same method (coats of material)
as a professional painter, i keep a clean shave all the time. seals real well. i use a 3m full face respriator and a dupont proshield suit. i wear chemical gloves or some medical latex gloves with the sleeves of my suit tucked in. i would also suggest a fan that moves a lot of air. make sure that smell wont get in your house. i didnt seal off one area on my home made booth and it smelled like paint inside my house. i painted my car inside my garage. though it would be ok. apparently not lol.
Roachjuice are you using some sort of fresh air supply or do you just rely on the fan providing the ventilation? Good info for sure fellas, thanks.
no mine is a full face cartridge type mask. the cartridges filter pretty good. i get my blood tested twice a year for hexavalent chromium. always comes back normal. the ventilation is so that the overspray doesnt stick around and land on what your painting. it dries in the air then lands on the part and looks like dirt. if you paint something with a spray gun in a room with no moving air you have these paint particals just floating around waiting to land in your nice paint job lol. the stuff i do here i cant buff out. car stuff you can wet sand with 2000 grit and buff it out with a rubbing compound. 3m makes a real nice buffing compound. also meguires (sp?) is good.

the problem i have with fresh air masks is that you smell the air compressor your hooked up too and it takes away the air pressure your spraying through your gun. thats assuming your hooked to the same compressor.
I was looking at one of the hobby air systems you can get for around $400.
this is what i use.

buy one of these and the filters. use the organic/acid gas ones. should work great.
Yah, but they don't really cover all combos of big nose, small chin or vice versa. Gotta try them.. I have issues fitting over the bridge of the nose, and sealing at the sides, they'll seem to sit right, but breathing out will blow the seal and and I'll get about a third of a lungful through it before it sucks closed again...

thats why i say clean shave. helps a ton. tighten it to your face. i think mine is a large. i have a pretty big nose lol. fits me fine. sideburns also get in the way. op should be fine if he seals it up good. just remember, if you smell paint then its not sealed lol.
Yah, coz the sides of my nose have rough stubble... :P
I understand the point, for cheek and chin sealing, for nose sealing, not so much... I have a sharp angled bridge that almost goes concave at the top sides,

I like the idea of the full-face mask, I've seen too many painters with major red-eye, and not because it was 420... Besides, I can imagine an unpleasant surprise latter in life, cataract surgery anyone?...

all ive used for the last 15 years is the 3M half face mask. ive never had any problems, dont waste your money on a fresh air setup if you're just going to do one or a couple paint jobs, not worth the money when a standard respirator will do just fine.
a $15 box fan from walmart will move plenty of air. you just want to suck the fumes out, not create a hurricane that stirs up dust into your wet paint.
definately use an HVLP gun no matter what- makes a HUGE difference on the paint fumes and over spray in the air when painting.
