I am installing a ported exhaust manifold on a non-ported head (8v) and my brother is telling me to grind some of the material out of the gasket to promote exhaust flow as it is blocking off a bit of the port on the top/sides.
Is this really necessary? I already screwed up 1 gasket trying to do it.
Will the extra gasket material just burn out?

You should really grind it off as it won't burn away. Use a die grinder or dremel with the a closed scallop bit for metal, the open fluted ones are too rough and will damage the gasket.
