A413 transfer/pinion shaft bearing endplay or preload?

I'm setting up my 1.22 transfer gears and I have spaced out a new bearing on the transfer/pinion shaft. I currently have .002" of endplay in the transfer/pinion shaft. The ATSG manual for the a413 states endplay for the shaft should be .002" to .010", while the output shaft gear and bearing should have a preload as well as the differential bearings having a preload.

Is this how everyone normally sets the transfer/pinion shaft up or do they add a little preload? I ask because I read where turbovanman had issues with the bearing cup retainer and mentioned adding preload.

I've actually never checked, being as the stock gears don't have any shims, etc, I just assemble it and leave it at that, lol. The only issue I've had is the bearing holder on the pinion rotate so I fixed that problem.

I believe I will leave it at .002" since I went and checked the stock gear that came out of it with it's shim and it's endplay was at ~.002-.003". The only other selectable shim that I have right now(original to this trans) puts about .009-.0010" of preload on the bearings and I'd have to order some more to get anything different. The selectable shim I have in it with the 1.22 gear is from my spare trans and it came out perfect at .002".

I thought the washer thing and round sleeve deal were the shims? I've never had to reshim one due to the fact that I've been lucky enough that they've fallen within specs when I've swapped them.

It could be, I've measured a few and they were all the same size? So I've never given it another thought and never had an issue, yet?

I've definitely seen some which are a bit different in thickness.

Re: A413 transfer/pinion shaft bearing endplay or preload?

The steel selective shim for the transfer shaft is on the left, next to the two 1/8" shims I made to space out the 1.22 gear. The stock selective shim measured 0.100" while the one from my spare trans that I used measured 0.112"

The ones for the output shaft do look like a sleeve with two oil holes and they are also selective from what I read. I reused the stock one for the 1.22 output gear.
