How hard is it to do yourself? I haven't looked into that, but the kits look like there's not much to it. Of course there's a lot of stuff in life that looks like it would be easy and is far from it due to specialized equipment or steep learning curve.

    Re: rack and pinion rebuild?

I sent a GLH rack & pinion to Steer & Gear to be rebuilt a couple months ago. Turn around time was quick and cost was about $230 iirc. I haven't installed it yet but it sure looks nice.

I didn't get any kind of documentation on what was wrong with the core but it seemed like it was in decent shape before I sent it in, although the car had been sitting for about 10 years before I pulled the rack out and sent it to them. I found that it was very difficult locating a rebuilt fast ratio rack for the L-body through the parts stores or even Rock Auto, so I felt it was best to send a known GLH steering core to be rebuilt so I would be sure I was putting the correct part back on the car upon reassembly. Considering that, even though the price of the rebuild was a little higher than I expected, I don't regret the purchase at all. Wish I had some post-install feedback but I'm just not there yet.

If I ever need another rebuilt rack, I will likely go through Steer & Gear again. I have gotten rebuilt racks through NAPA but it's been hit or miss with how long they last.

I looked at doing it myself but decided not to. There are definetly some specialized tools required to take it apart.
