89 Dodge Lancer Shelby High Performance Water Pump

    Fellow Moparians,

I have a 1989 Dodge Lancer Shelby, 2.2 Turbo II engine. My water pump housing has a crack in it so time to get a new WHOLE water pump, housing and all. Since, from time to time, in the summer, on full boost for more than a minute or so the water temp gets a bit high I was thinking, while I'm at it, why not put in a "high performance water pump". The turbo II is the same engine as in a lot of other cars of that era, I figure someone has had to have gone this route before. The electric pump sounds like an easy fix but I am not sure it sounds like a reliable solution, particularly since it will be hitting the battery pretty hard. I have looked at a few mechanical pump vendors but have been seeing mostly V8 solutions. Has anyone out there got so me pointers?

I just noticed that the water pump housing on this car is integrated with the alternator belt adjustment mechanism (or at least that is what it looks like at this point). So, in case I have to go "stock" where would be the best place to find the housing? I have tried mopar.com, rockauto.com, and a couple of other sites, no dice. I would hate to have to put a junkyard piece in as who knows how long that will last. Is there any place to get quality engine parts for these cars?

There are no high flow waterpumps, so stock is all you get. A trick is to remove every other impeller, supposed to stop cavitation at higher rpm's.

With properly functioning cooling system, it works just fine. If its getting hot while driving then check that all the air is going thru the rad IE no missing deflectors and if you have a stock IC, then most likely the stock TII rad is internally plugged up and needs recoring.

Used is your only choice for water pump housings, I have one if you need one.

We have a few vendors, check out our vendor section.

don't forget to port the housing along with grinding off 3 fins. The CB waterpump housing is nicer than the earlier one as far as how restrictive it is but the CB one still needs ported too.

So, porting the water pump is like cleaning up the ports on a 2-stroke engine, i.e. you are smoothing out the imperfections that remain in the casting from the manufacturing process. So, spin up the Dremel and create a mirror-like finish. {:>)

hog the hell out of it to match it at the block, smooth some things out around the impeller. There's a couple crappy camera phone pics of water pumps in the process of being ported here. http://www.pnw-sdac.org/gallery/v/Te.../Robs+porting/

There was a local SDAC (shelby dodge auto club) chapter a few years ago, but when the club president passed away, so went the club.

No local parts, other than junk yards or national part stores. Look in the venders section for companies at specialize in in our cars.
