    Project 4.4L shadow quattro

Yup, I want to add an engine in the back of my shadow. My reasoning is this, having a 400+ hp daily driver is a little rough on parts and money, so I figured tunring the wick down was out of the question, but adding a second engine didn't seem too difficult.

I know some of you guys in Wisconsin have done it with a shadow, I think there was a Rampage in California that did the same. So I am looking for any advice from those that were part of either of those projects. I know Russ Jerome was in on the one from Wisconsin.

So I have a red 1989 shadow with a 2.2L turbo 2 swap and an auto trans already done. I'm going to figure out how to do everything from wiring, to exhaust, to connecting it to the car to cooling and a fuel tank on this red car, then once it's all figured out, rebuild the engine and trans and swap everything into my 1988 shadow.

Anyone who were part of these projects have any input or suggestions? Tips, tricks, warnings?

The one thing I really want to do is have a very normal looking shadow when I'm done. Obviously it will be a 2 seater once this starts. Roof scoops and ducts are not something I want. I like sleepy.

Pics so far.... I update from time to time....http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?s...4170580&type=3

I plan for this to take up my garage for a looong time, probably 2 years or more so I'm in no rush to dive into it. I hope to plan it out and get it right.

Interesting. One thing to add, 400 whp can be expensive but who uses all that on the street, with the boost turned down, it will last for years.

I do not use any boost control at all. It's got one setting. All of it.

Back from the dead. I have been in contact with Russ Jerome and he's offered some helpful tips and words of advice. I've been at this for over a year for those very few people here who are also on crackbook, they have been watching some progress pics, but for the rest, here's where I got to the other morning. I have this red 2 door 89 shadow as a practice car, then it'll all end up in my black '88.

Thanks Pat. A year ago, I wasn't sure if I could get this far, never mind complete this project, so I didn't update here. It's already been through 2 frame redesigns that have set me back months. Now, I'm pretty sure I'm capable of completing it, so I'll continue on, but the expectations of 2 years to complete will probably go a little over.

It's officially an 8 cylinder, twin turbo all wheel drive shadow. Just a few more things to iron out before the first road test.

btw a couple questions I cant help but ask:

-have you ever considered putting the drivers seat right in the middle? seems like something you could pull off..i.e. Mclaren F1 style

-do the engines need to be synchronized somehow? how is that accomplished?

No need for synchronization, one pushes, one pulls, they both assist one another. Same with transmission shift points. It's a wonderful thing to see.

That takes away from the stock look I'm aiming for.

Thanks for the , it means something coming from you. I like your work too.

As far as synchronized goes..... Much thought went into this and I'll say I have the same gears, manual valve bodies, and non lock up convertors. As long as the vacuum is nearly equal at cruise, I think I'll be fine. There's quite a bit of adjustment in the throttle cables the way how I made them.

Because he's running autos with non-lockup converters, engine synchronization isn't as important because the torque converters can absorb the small differences. The result is heat in the transmission fluid, so LARGE tranny coolers with fans are advisable.

I would imagine the load on the motors would be a lot less than a single motor car. Kind of like how a 1500 pound car is easier on motors and transmissions than a 3k lbs car.

I think I have the trans cooling under control, maybe have to add a little ducting to help out.

acannell , both engines have a home made intake manifold (modded 1 piece) and tbi headers. I made them years ago and picked up a bunch of power, so that was a must for the rear engine. There's still a nitrous system to be installed an the back engine too.

    Very nice progress!
I sooo want to have a second drivetrain in the back of MeanMini.
That was Gus' long term plan.
