Question A413 output gear size, speed/ratio at output shaft?

    Hi folks,

How big approx is the output shaft gear? 5"??? And is everything it drives the final drive ratio? So you essentially get gear ratio from input RPM to it?

I've been thrashing the search for a while, not using the right words or something. Could swear there were some neat threads with all sorts of info on this side, but can't turn them up. Then all the old tranny pages out there seem dead.

Anyway, I've got some strange idea of bolting up a homebrew motor/genny to the end of the output shaft, for a KERS or light hybrid system... or a 25HP shot of electric NOS if you wanna look at it that way. (Though actually in that mode for a limit of 5-10 seconds it could possibly get doubled up by giving it twice the juice, then wait until your tranny stops boiling and you can do it again.. )

Yah, I know the usual problem with that is the size of the thing, but I'm spitballing figures for something extremely compact. There's a type of motor, often neglected, that might have a "magic range" as it were, where one set of physical constraints and another overlap, (Or is that not overlap) allowing a method of making it act like multiple motors built into one. (Like there's a certain size above which it's impractical to build boats out of wood, and a certain size below which steel construction is ill advised.)

I'm having enough of a headache to get all the physics straight before the engineering starts. Then I am probably going to have to design a ballrace from scratch, and when I say from scratch, I mean down to the properties of the materials, which may turn out to have unusual requirements compared to normal races, so we'll see where that goes.

Well, forget I said anything really, at the moment, I'm spitballing parameters to see if it's even faintly possible, then after that, there would be a lot of jerry rigging equipment to jerry rig a test model.

Problem with bolting a motor onto the output shaft is the interference with the tire when turning. The tire already comes close and in some wide tire applications brushes against the side cover so there is no rood for an addition to the side of the transmission.

Hmmm, I guess the vans have a touch more room, wasn't thinking about that, but I guess I'll have to check up on that before committing.... seeeeems like I could have something sticking out up to 4" into the well there on mine, but better do a clearance check.

Couldn't you run the PTO for all wheel drive and stick your electric NOS motor to that instead?

That's an interesting thought AJ, thanks, will have to look into that... might be able to be bigger.... though need gearing down... though it might end up needing cables like firehoses if it goes too big.
