    Power Module Died?

Last night I washed up my 86 shelby charger for the season . I started the car and let it idle for about 15 min while I cleaned out a spot for it in the garage. Backed the car in the garage and all of a sudden car just died.

No fuel pump coming on and starter doesn't even crank or click. Smoke came from the power module area under the hood. It looks like something got too hot, do those symptoms point to power module?

There is full power inside the car and the fan and lights all work.

Is there a difference in TI power modules? (ie lbody to gbody or manual to auto)

    Thanks

Sounds like a fusable link, they are in that area. Take each one and give it a tug, bad ones will be stretchy.

There isn't a difference between the turbo PMs. I too would check the fusible links first.

To bring up an old thread, is there any way to test the fusible link? If its bad, where can I find a new one?

they sell them at NAPA i know, crappy tire has em no doubt.

you should get all fancy and pull a fuse box/power center from a lincon or soemthing. upgrade!

when the links are bad they wire melts away and they strech like rubber bands.

    Re: Power Module Died?

To bump this old thread again - Finally got some time to dig into this thing, took apart the harness in that area and found an orange fusible link wire (said 20 ga on it) that had melted. I had one of those modern fuse holders and wired it in. The fuse holder came with a 20amp fuse so I figure I'd go ahead and at least try it.

It blew right away - My question is what is the proper rating for a fuse that I should put in? I want to get that figured out first so I can at least see if I just had a bad fusible link or I have a deeper problem.

    - - - Updated - - -

Also the orange 20 ga wire, what does that feed?

I had a set of service manuals but since I moved haven't been able to find them.

    Re: Power Module Died?

You need to be using a maxifuse type of fuse. A standard fuse will blow immediately. The fusible links were a time delay type of deal. I'm assuming that's because a lot of the components can pull some big amps for s split second when coming on.

You mean a fuse like this correct:

as I used similar to above with a 20amp fuse

Is that a normal fuse like what you would use under the dash? If so then it is the wrong type.

Ah icic, I'll have to head to the parts store and pick up some. Im guessing that the fuse holder that I wired in probably won't fit the maxifuse then and I'll have to change out the fuse holder.

I'm not up on all the fuse types, but the maxi fuses are a lot larger than the standard jobs.

Yeah from google searching it I think you're right

What I may do is just bite the bullet and go to the inlaws tomorrow and cut out a power distribution block from a 2000 neon they have out there and go to town.

Those are a great option. I just picked up a 2nd gen power dist center the other day and it has enough relay spaces complete in the thing to run everything we need including the headlights. My only concern with them is that I think on some stuff the wiring may be a size down from what it is on our cars. I assume this to be from more efficient components which have been brought to market in the 25 years since ours were new.

    Re: Power Module Died?

Sorry for the late reply, the link in question was the orange 20 Gauage wire that Tees off to the ignition switch and power module. Once I replace the link or wire in a fuse box i'll try also swapping out power modules to see if that's my problem.
