Exclamation HELP! (update) Starter stuck on '04 Dakota

    Hi everyone,
I need to change a starter on my 04 dakota, 3.7 liter V6 manual trans. I removed the wires, one bolt from starter to trans, and one nut that was connecting the starter to the stud on the transmission. This thing WILL NOT BUDGE! I spend several hours banging on it, and even tried to hammer a large flat screwdriver between the starter and the gasket but it seems like it is still bolted up.
I felt all around and I got all the fasteners removed. The new starter prooves there are only two mounting holes. The only thing I can think is the starter is frozen around the one stud.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Lee

UPDATE: I paid a shop to flame wrench it off. Bad corrosion gave them a lot of trouble as well.
Duralast starter went in. They couldn't find a replacment for the melted start terminal clip off the wiring harness, so they just put RTV on to hold it in. Worked great until it heated up a few times. This time I burned the starter motor out. Am I missing a heat shield or something? How can I get a replacment for the plastic clip to the start terminal? This plastic clip hooks directly to the starter.

Is there a small strap to hold the other end of the starter?

Do you mean opposite the flywheel side? If so, no there is no strap. At first I thought maybe because I left the truck in gear, the teeth were stuck, but then I remembered that gear only engages when you start the truck. I even tried shifting to neutral, but no help.

It sounds like corrosion has reared its ugly head and it is just frozen in place. I ran into this on a ford once. I beat on the starter for 2 hours before it finally moved and I could pry it loose. Best of luck and sorry I can't give you the magic fix.

Should I try heating the aluminum housing around the stud with a plumbers torch?

If you can safely get in there with a big hammer or a large punch/drift i would just hit it as hard as you can stand to (usually fear of self-injury becomes a factor at some point) before resorting to heat. Just make sure not to hit it in a way that its going to crack the trans bellhousing where that stud is in it.

Dont push the red button. You hear me?
