Regarding the future value of these cars.

this is a quote from another forum regarding the 60's Mopar muscle cars.
"The ironic thing about a lot of these old musclecars is that in the early '80's, no one wanted them and you could pick them up for pennies on the dollar for what they cost new.

sound familiar?

Yep, I see a lot of similarities. In the 80's, the muscle cars were twenty years old. Prices really took off in the early to mid 90's (30 years). Our cars at at the magic 25 year mark now, I see prices starting to go up sometime in the next five years. I've noticed an increase in interest in our cars, particularly during this last year.

The only value I need for my car is the enjoyment value when I'm working and driving them.

I consider my car an investment, an investment in fun that is! I'm excited that the value of these cars will eventually go up, but I will never realize the gain financially. I'll leave that for my kids when they sell my car the day after I die...LOL

Re: Regarding the future value of these cars.

As the demographic that grew up with these cars moves into it's stage of having disposable income, the value will increase based on supply and demand. Supply is short already due to rust and the fact these cars have been cheap and considered disposible.

Every year I run into more people who comment on which ever Turbo dodge I happen to be driving. I'm talking about both car enthusienst and the general public. This summer's most heard comments were: "I haven't seen one of those in forever." and "My first car was a Turbo Charger, Omni, Daytona, etc."

Consider the numbered Whittier Shelby cars. These are limitied production performance cars with a pedigree. Sure a lot of people turn up their noses at our beloved Turbos, but you can't deny their history and performance. Eventually the prices will increase.

In fact I wish I would have opened my eyes back when I was building RoadRunners and Cudas and found some TM cars back when they were really cheap. And rust free.

For the time being I'm happy with prices where they are. I'll never be able to have the collection of classic V8 muscle I dreamt of in high school, but I do have a good chance at owning several rare Turbo Mopars. Hell, I'm already on my way and for a lot less than the cost of one RoadRunner or Cuda.

I'm having a lot more fun with these turbos too. Plus 25 MPG is tough to beat.

Re: Regarding the future value of these cars.

I've been seeing the values increasing already.

I got my first Turbo Dodge 8 years ago. I remember being able to find Shelby Z's, SC's and the more "popular" Dodges for a grand or less, in good shape. Parts were insanely abundant. I used to brose TD.com and it was impossible to keep track of the sale section. Junkyards were full of parts. I ended up selling that car and getting out of Dodges for about 4 years. I got the itch again, and picked up an 85 SC. Parts were still abundant, but not as much. Cars were still pretty affordable, but the Shelby cars value was starting to rise. You could still find a pretty nice car for a grand or two. Well I sold that car as I didn't have the time or money to take care of what it needed. Another 4 years later, I pick up my 87 SC. Paid 1100 bucks for it, and it was one of the rougher cars I've owned. Not complaining by any means, but my previous was 750, and the one before was free. I look around now, and see cars that would have been a grand going for 5-8 grand, and S cars going for over 10 grand. It also seems that you can look at the sale sections once every other day and not miss anything.

I don't think we have to look too far to the future to see these cars getting a bit more expensive. I couldn't believe my eyes seeing cars in similar shape to my previous cars going for 2-3 grand, when I paid next to nothing for my old ones.

Don't think I'll be letting it go for awhile unless someones willing to trade a '69 Super Bee with cash on top

Re: Regarding the future value of these cars.

Ok lets get it out in the open I'm a geezer!! But I have seen this before....in the early 80's....substitute Cuda, Challenger, Duster or Charger for GLHS, IROC, CSX, etc. At that point in time they were worthless turds...(In allot of peoples opinion). You could buy them all day long for $500-$1000. 340's 383's 440's ...Hemis were always tuff, but even those were there for $2500 or so. I know because I bought them. Everybody thought I was nuts for dealing with "those cars". The only people who gave a crap about them were the hard core "Mopar Guys". My point is, eventually even some of the most obscure cars become "collectible"...who would have ever thought a Duster would be worth $30k.. I mean really, that was unfathomable in 1985. Almost as unfathomable as a GLHS being worth $30k today. I took my 87 GLHS to the Mopar Nats this year, I expected it to draw about as much attention as one of the toilet sucking trucks that roll trough (wait they actually do draw a lot of attention). Anyway I could not believe the number of people that looked it over. A couple of guys I know who are big time collectors/restorers stopped by and both said that they would love to have one and thought they were “a good bargain”. When these type of people start getting involved, prices will go up.

Exactly. Every time I hear of an A body going for big dollars, I regret scrapping my 1974 Dart Sport 360.

Yah, they are likely to go up in value more in teh coming years, they're never going to be as peaky as the muscle era cars though. Firstly because gen Xers who lusted after these in their teen years aren't as numerous as the boomer teens who lusted after the muscle cars back when, and secondly, because gen Xers aren't as well off as the boomers. So, you had a sitch where there's a lot of people with a lot of money after a few cars, where as now it will be less people with less money after a few cars, which won't pump the price quite as high.

The minute i see more money than sense wallet tuning geezers on Barrett Jackson bidding on Shelby Zs, I'm climbing a clock tower. Though it could have some good. Maybe edelbrock and year one would take us seriously

Please don't run me off the board for this, speaking of '80's cars, but a guy down the block has a rusted 'round the edges Ford EXP (a two seater, BTW...that's how they were delivered), that looks kinda cool! I think Ford was copying the 80's Charger!Click image for larger version.

Re: Regarding the future value of these cars.

Yah, there's very few people caring for those, they beat Chrysler to the turbo by a year, the '84 EXP had a 1.6 Turbo option, only put out 120ish in stock tune, but it only had to drag round 2000lb.

IF they ever get popular, they are probably gonna outstrip even numbered cars for value, because they are very few and far between these days. I have never actually seen one in the flesh. Maybe down south they fared a little better.

I remember 1982, visiting a used car lot that had a (NOW) Classic 70's Challenger, green/white vinyle top, and I think he wanted $1000± for it, which, I didn't have. Trans needed work, (kept moving forward, even in park), body was in good shape, (well, it WAS 30 years ago, so I THINK it was in good shape...), but i was just married.... (My best friend STILL owned his green with black vinyle top, 383 'cuda, at the time...carumbuh...who knew)??

It's got some rust down low, around, pretty much, all the sheet metal. I read that also, even with the turbo, they were underpowered. (Or, maybe BEFORE the turbo..well, can't believe everything i type)!
