Strong gas smell in my 1st Gen Neon after it has sat over a couple of days

I have an EXCELLENT running 98 Plymouth (rip) Neon, SOHC powered that I drag race and when I drive it after it has sat for a couple or more days there is a strong gas smell in the interior until it has been driven quite a distance. Could it be bad seals on the injectors. One shop that had it for another problem noticed the smell but could not find it. If it is driven every day there is no smell at all.

Check the gas gas tank filler neck. I have seen some pretty rusty ones.

Can you find someone with a smoke tester? I had a broken vent valve on top of the tank.

Is the car rusty? I've had fuel lines that actually wouldn't leak while running or sitting but vented enough to smell.

Also check the EVAP lines, gas cap and what others have said. Usually for me, fuel injectors or o-rings that leak are pretty easy to see on 4 Neon type engines.

Maybe install a fuel pressure gauge and see if the pressure drops overnight?

Had that problem for the longest time in my Daytona. Turned out the fuel pressure regulator was leaking fuel into my vacuum system, mostly into the hose going to my boost gauge.

I'm not familiar with Neons, but might be worth checking.

check the fuel line under the hood going to the rail, on everyone i've seen they have a small dampner built into the line, near the firewall, everyone i've seen with this also shows evidence of fuel leaking from that dampner.

Re: Strong gas smell in my 1st Gen Neon after it has sat over a couple of days

Today I was having the car worked on because the last time I drag raced it the cam belt broke...only 40,000 miles was on it and a junk belt tensioner bearing was the culprit. My wrench found that the quick release section of fuel line going to the injector rail was leaking. Now that the car is apart I am debating a 3 angle valve job and milling 20 thou off the head. The car is a slightly modded 95 SOHC Neon....TB from an automatic car, injectors from an automatic car, ported plastic intake, "performance" cat, and a cheap universal V8 Camaro muffler at the rear. When the belt broke all 8 exhaust valves touched the pistons, barely bending 4 of the valves, 2 barely and 2 others leak more on a liquid leak down test. I don't have much $$$$ so I might just go the cheap way via used valves and a hand lap job with no valve job and no milling. I don't know how much hp improvement would be gained witht he extra work and if it would be worth it.

BTW my Escort seems to reek around the Evap canister when it's been sitting a while in hot weather.

Regulator is built into the fuel pump assembly on neon's.

Since I am broke and cheap I decided to get some of his good used valves hand lapped and put in. The biggest hp for the $$$ seems to be a 2002-2005 Magnum R/T SOHC head, intake, and exhaust....so I'll just save my money for now and wait until I find that set up...anyone out there have that sitting around?

Got the head, cam, exhaust header and the magnum intake manifold. Only problem is some bent valves.

So....does it say R/T on the side of it? If it is I am VERY interested as a future investment. Are the exhaust valves bent? Let me know....
