    Rod Cap question

As I was taking the rod cap off the cap portion of the bearing fell out. I’m 99.99% sure how it goes back in BUT, as I was fishing for the bearing half I dropped the cap.

So, is there an easy way to tell which way the cap goes back on to the rod? I didn’t take a close look at it just yet but I will be.

    Thanks,
    Paul

    Re: Rod Cap question

On the rod cap, there should be an indent for the bearing's tab. The rod's housing bore has this tab as well. Both tabs position themselves on the same side... not opposing. Don't forget which way to put the piston back in along with the oil squiter hole in the rod as well. I forget right now, but the oil squirter faces the front of the engine.... double check with your FSM.

BTW...why did you take the rod cap off? If you spun a bearing or there was a bearing issue, you MUST resize the rod's big end as this is an indication to why you had a failure.

I had lower than normal compression in #2. 90 psi, 100 psi with some oil. It was either valve or piston related and since there was some doubt I figured what the heck - the head is off why not pull #2 out and see how the ring lands are.

The bearing looked great - as great as a 46k mile engine is concerned. No discoloration, no scratches, just a normal looking bearing.
