Thumbs up Another option for valve seals. :O)

I forgot this but doing some work on the head and remembered, valve seals off a 1995 Tbird 4.6 work perfectly and are dirt cheap. Best part is, they are the hat design so the valve spring keeps them in place.

nice to know for a noob like me. i have found another r/t that is not too aweful far from me, that has been sitting for a while and looks like it may have had many pieces robbed from it. I am going to attempt to acquire this during tax season and start tearing it down and use for spare parts. and of course a spare engine to rebuild and have waiting.

Looks right but I am using Sealed Power #SS72891. You can remove the factory shim too as these are the shim.

Just put these in yesterday, Awesome!!! Way better than the originals. Take your time when doing them and count the number of shims removed to make sure you removed all 16... Luckily I didnt get to far when I realized I forgot to remove a shim from one of them.

    Thanks Simon!!!

The seal looks to be a polyacrylic material vs viton, are they viton?

I was told they were Viton by the machine shop last year but I'll double check. Good point, thanks.

For the uninitiated, what does that mean? Are these a no go then? If so, why?

Viton survives a lot of heat, polyacrylic = weaksauce

In most of the motor and transmission, polyacrylic sealing rubbers do fine, they hold up to 205c, 400F but in direct contact with valve stems that could hit 600F intermittently Viton will hold up to that for 48 hours continuous (You'd have to have it pegged for that long at top speed methinks to consider that an issue) or 3000 hours at 230/450 where the polyacrylic would have already given up. (That's about 150,000 miles of very hard driving)

---------- Post added at 11:47 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:45 AM ----------

Oh btw, that's before the rubber degrades, doesn't account for physical wear, shouldn't plan on valve seals lasting more than about 100K really.

Looks like the other part number given above, Sealed Power ST2140, are made of Viton. RockAuto also states that Sealed Power SS72891 (the ones that Simon uses) are "Police; Premium valve stem seals incl.; Improved design". That's under the listings for the 1994 Lincoln Town Car with the 4.6L V8. If anyone's running their cars at maximum stress, it's got to be the police...

I take it they only fit the 16V cars? Or does anyone know if they work on an 8V?

I am sure you could find something similar, you need an 8mm valve stem, ours are 7mm. The GM 3100's are 8mm and use that type of seal.
