Hi everyone-
I'm replacing a cylinder head on a 2.2 right now due to a valve problem (as a side project for the last few weeks) and came across this thread when I realized that I couldn't get the Mopar head gasket that I'd had good success with in the past. I was unsuccessful at tracking down a Mopar performance gasket, so I purchased both a FelPro gasket and also an ROL gasket, as neither was terribly expensive and I wanted to compare them side by side. Based on visuals, below are my impressions of each.
The ROL HG32980 gasket had a red silicone-type sealant bead around the passages similar to the Mopar gasket. The gasket was also "plumped" around all of the passage holes for a tighter seal, which I liked. What I didn't like about the ROL was that the surface material reminded me of the old Victor Reinz gasket that I used many years ago: a rather bare loose-looking graphite. Having just spent a lot of effort scraping blotches of graphite off the block surface, this struck me as a downside. The old Mopar gasket had a more "glazed" non-stick type appearance than this bare-looking graphite.
The Fel-Pro "PermaTorque" gasket, by comparison, did not have the sealant bead nor was it plumped around the passage holes, and these were downsides to me. It was very uniform in thickness. The surface appeared more dense and glossy and it has the blue printing across it. The best feature, I thought, was that there was extra metal reinforcement along the triangular passages at the rear corners (as discussed earlier in this thread), similar to the metal rings around the cylinder holes.
These are just my visual impressions. Both appeared to be decent quality gaskets. I wound up deciding to install the Fel-Pro because my biggest worry was the rear corners.. If I wasn't working with a brand new cylinder head and super-clean block surface, I might have chosen to install the ROL because it looked like it would conform and seal better around the passages.
Hopefully someone will find this useful, as I definitely found the rest of this thread helpful. Sorry to bump an old thread, but it was a good one.

Isn't there still a huge stockpile of old Felpro headgaskets out there that are different than the newer stock?

Nice first post. Welcome to the site.
The newer Fel Pro's are still junk. Funny, I just told someone in another thread to get an ROL gasket.

I thought ROL was out of business? Felpro works fine for me with liberal addition of copper spray
ROL had a booth at SEMA so I think they will be around a while.

What is EVERYONE went to the dealer and ordered a new Mopar head gasket that they say is on back order.
You think they would make them if they had that many orders.

I bought 15 back when they were available so I have enough to last me.......
Great stuff for great cars! Poly engine mounts and bushings at: http://www.polybushings.com
If Chrysler didn't do anything for gen 2 neon owners looking for a k- frame, don't expect much for a bunch of old cars like ours.
the gen 2 k - frames have been discontinued for almost 10 years now.
I guess this settles it, you guys are just going to have to convert to a 2.4, plenty of head gaskets available.
time to get back in on my initial plans for a group buy guys
AFAIK Cometic still makes HG's for 2.2L/2.5L

How much is the cometic? It's probably cheaper to just buy that rather than do multiple hg jobs.
Its around 100. But then facor in its best to purchase studs as well (100) and have your block and head remilled to their roughness spec, which is a lot smotther than what the other gaskets will accept. Bonus is that its all reuseable.
Ain't the blocks pretty durn smooth from factory?

Not really. Add 20 years of wear and tear and head gasket replacements of questionable installation quality (using a buzz wheel to get it clean…) who's to say how good things really are. One reason why the OEM composite head gasket was such a good one. Its very tolerant of crappy/less than ideal installation.
