    F4 Cam install.

I am gretting ready to Install a Fwdp F4 cam in my car. I know what to do but the only thing I am confused about is it came with a set of what look like washers? Where do they go? And from experiance what did you guys find cam timing be best set at or is every setup vary?

I take it you bought a re-grind? (not a new billet) The washers would go, under the lifters (lash adjusters)

Did you get the Crane springs to run with it as well? (or what valve springs are you going to run?)

yes I bought the f4 cam package. Yes Im using the crane valve springs got everything installed cam timing set straight up and it idles like a stock cam is that normal i would have expected a little bit of a lope.

Stockish idle, 15-16" vacume. What height did you install the springs at?

Well my dad installed them for me so I am guessing at whatever height the factory ones were?

    Re: F4 Cam install.

You can see how they work like that, but for 7000+ RPM they should be squeezed just a little more. (+ it reduces harmonics to have a spring installed as tight as it will go for any given application )

I don't know why they list this as a Drag race cam? It's totally streetable and when installed right it idles just fine and make Great power gains!

If you want more of a lope, just take some fuel away at idle, I like mine sounding nice and tame.

Well the valvecover is coming off for a nice polishing soon so I might just have to tighten them down a little more . And yeah I dont know why either its actually a very good cam im running it in my dd and it still makes good low end power

Thanks for the info so far, what car and engine mods are done to this already? Does the boost spool sooner or later?

    Re: F4 Cam install.

I found little to no difference in spool, maybe 100rpm through full exhaust. Interesting to hear the OP's results on this.

The F4 cam is most likely The Best Cam you can by for one of these mtrs right now. I would have included the old Taft S3, but you can't buy them any more. Most don't realize, Not all cams work well. Most don't give any better than stock like performance, some even worse!

There are a few ppl in the community who have done extensive cam testing and this is why I'm running the F4. If there were a better "off the shelf" Proven cam I would be running it!

Just don't know why FWD lists it as a "race only" cam, prob why so few try to run it on the street! lol

Id say little to no difference in spool also. I would not let the Race only scare you away I took the chance and I couldn't be happier Still got my low end grunt and it pulls noticeably harder in the higher rpms, If you are looking at purchasing a cam i'd say F4 is the way to go.

Current mods are just a lightly ported head side-mount intercooler 2.5 inch exhaust +20s and 14 psi from a Garrett T2.

This turned out to be another interesting thread on the F4 cam, This just proves again the the F4 is a street cam and not a race only.

Other than finding one used, how? I haven't heard of anyone carrying these since Taft stopped making them years ago.

I just got my car on the road using a F4, mildly ported swirl head, I agree it is totally streetable. what can a stock 2.5 cranks take for RPM? I end up bouncing it off the rev limiter with out realizing it! I think once I get a new tune made I'll need to get the rev limiter raised. this thing loves to rev now!

RPM is limited by how well the engine can breath, I used to spin mine to 7500, other 2.5 guys similar rpm. RPM isn't the killer, its other things like rod's letting go etc.
