Neon Alt Replacement Suggestions, Garage or Person in St Pete to do Swap

Howdy,

In my infinite wisdom, before she moved to St Pete ,FL last year, I pulled my Daughters perfectly fine, working Alternator, and replaced it with a "brand new" (not reman) Remy unit from Advanced Auto.

Almost exactly one year later her Neon is showing code 41(Generator field not switching properly), and upon having the charging system tested it is only producing 11 volts.

Advance no longer carries this unit (surprise!), but will give me a full refund.

Sooo, she needs a replacement...anybody have a favorite, reliable brand the would recommend? Anybody have experience with the "Worldwide" brand of remans? I'd prefer to stay with a lifetime warranty unit.

Anybody know of a decent garage or individual in St Pete that can do the swap?

Got this reply on a different forum from someone with a job in the supply chain...


"Remy is still in production, and they make quality aftermarket alternators. They also make the "worldwide" reman, and the "driveworks" reman. Same factorys, different processes on the product.

The difference between the "worldwide" reman and a "remy" new alternator is that the remy has a brand new case. They both have brand new internals, everything is replaced. The case gets a media blast and paint also in the "reman" The "driveworks" reman with a 1 year warranty gets a failure analysis, and the failed part is replaced, and the case is media blasted.

Remy also makes "delco" reman alternators, and many other brands of rebuilt alternators. Something like 60%-70% of ALL reman starters and alternators are manufactured by "remy starters and alternators"

Well,

Found a shop that does electrical work in St Pete.
An hour and a half worth of wiring tests later, turns out...it was the year old, brand new, Remy alternator.

Hmmm so they had the code that pointed at the alt, and it took them an hour and half to find fault with it? I guess it was better for them than the $120 in parts and 15 mins labor if she just strolled in and said change it.

Uh Huh,

Actually I told her to have them do a full diagnostic on it, because of the code 41.

They spent an hour checking the wiring, fusible link, and hooked a scan tool to the PCM and did a ground test to the Alternator connector...first.

Then they charged a half hour to R&R the alternator, + $90 bucks for a reman unit. They back their reman with a 1yr parts and labor warranty.

Cost her $220 out the door, but Advance will give me a full refund for the new Remy unit. Actual cost will be $70 bucks out the door for the reman unit/diagnostic time/labor.

Really wanted to have the wiring/PCM checked before we just chucked a new Alternator at it.

Well I guess better safe than sorry then. But I'd have been cool if they just checked the alt and confirmed it was bad.
