    I wouldn't call a 2.28 short time good traction

Oh trust me the traction was not the problem. I was not spinning. I am working on getting my launching methods down.

    Yea I believe I cracked a piston. Compression was 125 130 130 135 but cylinder #1 had 70% leakdown.

aww, that sucks. When I was first dabbling with calibrations I broke so many pistons in my original Daytona I had it down to about 2 hours to swap a piston out

Cracked piston would show up in the compression test, I found cracked ones always netted me 90 psi. I bet your rings are done or the valves aren't sealling.

2.2 60ft is pretty dang good, nice runs man.

The reason you slowed down with the 52mm is your head is the cork, you can't get anymore air thru.

Could actually just be a blown headgasket.

Pull the plugs, a broken piston would be oil fouled.

So it was a cracked piston that was also burnt, along with another burnt piston. Replaced them with oem pistons and new rings and the engine has been running better than ever for 2k miles. I believe I set the ring gap to .19 top and .17 bottom.

Right now I am leaving it on the stock computer and 12psi. I am going to do some weight reduction and change the intercooler/exhaust/intake setup also. Then I will get a stage 5 tune for it.

    I've got 4 of those...

At least you dont have 0.030" over cast mahles...I'm all out of spares and I think there is like one person on earth with a few left for sale..and that was years ago.

BTW the best traction I got in the daytona was about 2.1s, and that was with full slicks, a ~9.0 1/8th, and about 300whp, and it felt like the best traction of all time to me anyway..theres definitely alot to say about launching methods and driver factor..I should probably have been able to do alot better...

I wonder how many people with 2.2/2.5's break pistons because they have been given unjustifiable fear of large ring gaps....only to break the pistons (so what would have been so bad about a larger gap ). I would use the information from a broken engine to increase ring gaps where damage occurred.

I would run .002 to .004 larger than whatever broke AND have your 2nd ring gap larger than the top. Headgasket needs to be the fuse, not the pistons.

fwiw I never broke pistons during races @ 28psi...3 of mine broke because of electrical problems that caused lean-outs at boost...1 of them broke because I forgot I had taken the boost controller out and left it on my desk ...boost went off the gauge which went up to 30psi...I could actually hear the pinging...I have no idea how high the boost got

2.2 pistons are stronger than the 2.5 in stock form, 2.5's love to break ring lands with not much detonation. I have too many broken spares to count before I switched to Forged.

Re: 89 Voyager 1/4 mile times are in!

Regardless of what caused detonation, its still detonation, and a bigger ring gap would have allowed something like the headgasket to fail first. I find it absolute nonsense to run small gaps on big boost motors NO matter how lucky someone else has been. Its not worth the risk and there is basically zero upside to a small gap on a highly abused motor...there is very little advantage to a small gap on a motor that is obsessed with fuel economy either. You can run ridiculously large gaps (like triple what you should) and oil change intervals will only slightly decrease.

Sometimes I feel like people give out bad advice with the intent of not actually helping people succeed. Its easy to give out the advice from the book and save the hard earned secrets for yourself so you look better (or secretly fix your junk all the time).

I think most people just dont ever think about ring gaps until something breaks because very very very few people are willing to do what is essentially an 'in-car rebuild' just to FIND OUT what their ring gaps are and be able to change them. Ring gaps, for better or worse, will always be something that most people will only change if and when they break pistons in the first place.

Speaking of which, i should really check/alter the ring gaps on the engine i am building for my spirit right now..

Dont push the red button. You hear me?

I just make sure mine are within factory spec. Plain ol cast mahles and plain ol rings that come with them. Is that considered big or small as far as gap?

How many hypereutectic pistons break because of ring gaps too close? Quite a few I'll bet. I'm putting together a low boost, low cost 2.5 turbo using hypereutectic pistons for my parts runner 85 NY'er. I'll be running around .019 top ring gap.
I'll bet the C and D stock Mahle pistons break ring lands less than the A and B's because the ring gaps are bigger. Every thousands bigger diameter bore will be .00314 bigger gap.
