Re: 89 Voyager 1/4 mile times are in!

Alright guys, I have not posted in a while, but I have a new setup plan. The head I have been running is a chinese one, which I have seen photos of how much smaller the ports are compared to factory. My new top end is going to be: A stock chrysler head, ported exhaust manifold, ported t2 garrett turbo/swingvalve, Custom 1 piece intake manifold and a ported 52mm throttle body.

What do you guys think it will make in terms of power? I plan on a stage 5 tune with +40's and 18psi of boost. I may change out the a523 I have in the van with a 3.50 final drive one, as the 3.85 gears are quite short. Hoping for somewhere in the 13's with traction.

as far as i know very few have run 13s with only 18psi in a van, I have been running a few more mods than your setup and i run 14.7s at best on 16 psi. I am at 4400' altitude though. I would bet you could get low 14s but probably need a bigger turbo to do much more.

BUT, if you go crazy and really lighten up the van you may have better success.

I dunno that you really NEED a S5 cal for that build. It'll work fine once you get the fueling and such sorted out (Cindy WILL work with you). It'll also give you room to grow, but if you plan to stick with that build, I'd consider a more mild tune, or get a custom cal from ShelGame.

The best I got with my van (full interior, rear seats removed) before I went 2.4 was 15.001. My setup was 2.5, .040" over forged pistons, self ported/cleaned up head, Toyota Supra intercooler, S60 turbo w/ceramic coated turbine housing, ceramic coated TU cast header, TU 3" swing valve, 3" exhaust, 2 piece ceramic coated intake, flex fuel (+20ish) injectors, and a very worn out automatic with the line pressure turned up to hold it together. I was also running slicks and I think 15-17 psi of boost.

I think the 52mm throttle body is going to be a waste on a one piece intake because of the restriction in the bend after the throttle body.

Re: 89 Voyager 1/4 mile times are in!

The intake I bought to install is a custom gutted one with a 2.5" elbow on it and shorter runners.

My best run so far with a mitsubishi turbo was a 14.5 at 92mph at 17psi on street tires (full weight minus bench seat and spare), but that was with an automatic (on a chinese head mind you). And I found my base timing was at 7 degrees. I already have a stage 3 tune, so I would just send it back in and get it re-cal'd with new injectors/map sensor. It made 187whp and 312wtq with this setup.

Now with the stickshift and some drag radials, I guess the only way to find out is to take it to the track. But I plan on doing the top end swap in the near future. I may have to up the boost to 20psi at some point to see what that does.

With the a523 and 24" drag radials I calculated that in 4th gear at 5500rpm it will be at 98mph, which I am hoping I trap somewhere close to that.

You running a 3.85 FD? 98mph at the top of 4th, even with the shorter tires seems a little low. That's just off the top of my head not crunching any numbers...I could be off.

Guys the only gear that's going to noticeably different in a 3:50 final drive 523 (compared to a 555/568) is going to be 5th gear. All the other gears are lower geared so that the effective ratio is virtually the same, so RPM's will be the same in 4th gear whether your running a 555/568 or a 523 3:50 FD.

Now a 523 3:85 FD would be really scrappy gearing, but since the comparison was for an 89' turbo mini I'm assuming we're talking 555 was stock.

The transmission I swapped in was from a 1990 tbi caravan, so its an a523 with 3.85 gears. The gears are pretty short.

I was considering getting a 3.50 trans, but then I wouldn't be at the optimal rpm for power in the traps.

Ok...that makes more sense. Thanks for the clarification.

Ahh, well, just make some more power and you'll eventually be at optimal power band in the traps Gotta plan for future upgrades.

Jason Hagger's 5spd van ran deep into the 13s on 18 psi.

My best that i have video was 13.45 with slicks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umkdckdsOtI

I probably had 50-60 passes with it in the 13's. The engine was a stock 2.5 with 175k on it. Only thing I did to the engine was put a Mopar headgasket and bolts when I first got it.

List of mods were as follows

1989 T2 intake manifold (all stock no porting)
    1989 T2 turbo with 2.5" swingvavle
stock turbo exhaust manifold (no porting)
    +20 injectors
    afpr
3 stock intercooler cores welded together
diode to go past 14 psi
    A568 from a 1990 with the 3.85 fd
    T2/T3 clutch
stock 2.5" downpipe with exhaust cutout right at the end of the downpipe.

That was it. My van was pretty light being manual everything and I did remove the rear two bench seats when racing.

Well, my transmission now makes knocking noises when in reverse. So I am going to swap in a 3.50 a523. Should be better with the longer gears.

New 3.50 a523, 14psi of boost, 15 degrees of timing, same old street tires (I know, I know you guys hate me for that)

    Netted a 14.7 at 94 mph with a 2.4 60ft.

With slicks you could probably snag a 13 second timeslip with that setup. But still a decent time on street tires Last time I used street tires, I kept the timeslip because it makes me laugh, I ran a 15.2 at 107mph. lol. I was making way too much power to try that on street tires.

Good job! You've joined the TINY TINY club of people whose minivans actually ran what they were supposed to on low boost. Make sure and post the slip details in the 1/4 mile times thread!

Well I installed a custom intake, ported exhaust manifold, ported garret turbo and swingvalve and a rebuilt oem head. I now have drag radials also. Hoping for 13's without breaking. And i'm getting boost creep even with a slightly enlarged wastegate hole.

    Who's ported exhaust manifold?

What drag radials specifically? What size? Although they're better than the tires you had for sure, you're still going to be hard pressed to get under a 2 second 60' time.

I went 15.6@86 on my 10 yr old dragradials on 10psi with a 2.5 60'(first pass and had tuning issues rest of night) 15.03@86 on the slicks.2.03 60' on 10psi.It a 20 over 2.5,stock head, fwd motion slider cam,2 piece unported intake.T2 Garret with clipped wheel and 2.5 exhaust housing,do not know if exhaust manifold is ported.Has stock t2 intercooler.Trans is a ohio rob auto with RMVB.Cracked a piston on the last outing when I got greedy for a 14's sec pass.Only weight reduction is rear seat removed and no a/c.
