There is one in my local bone yard. It had over 100,000 on it. I do not recall the price. More than I was willing to spend.

Thanks, but I'd like to find one with lower miles if possible.

Have you priced OEM parts? I have heard that Mopar engines are pretty reasonably priced.

Chrysler sells brand new shortblocks for "I THINK" around $1,500

Also note that the PT turbo is the exact same thing.

Yes I know this. Earlier today I looked up the Neon SRT4 short block and it was listed at 1178. Now it is listed at 1466, like you saw.

I just now looked up the PT turbo shortblock, which is the same thing, and it is listed at 1178.

This means at some point today they updated the price of the SRT4 block, but not the listing for the PT.

Not sure whether I would bay that, fair enough if it came out of a crashed SRT, but you gotta wonder if and how long it was run with a hole in the oil pan... seems worth the money for the core though, even if you gotta do all the bearings.

Re: SRT4 short or long block

Anyone have experience with the one from Mopar? Is it rebuilt, or new? Typically have oversize pistons? That's a really good price. I probably couldn't get the machine work done much cheaper than that to rebuild the one we have.

Thinking of buying it, removing pistons/rods, measuring bores really good, then putting in some JE/Eagles with standard tension oil rings (instead of Mopars low tension oil buring rings).

$650 is a bit steep, that thing looks ROUGH.

They should be brand new shortblocks. As far as I know MOPAR does not have any rebuilt stuff they sell. Local guy I know bought a SRT with a thrown rod and bought one from via the parts counter in town. I think he payed $1600 for it.

Re: SRT4 short or long block

    James,
I once bought a NOS TII early 8V shortblock from Mopar. It was that strange early looking block (with fuel pump cover) with all the CB webbing. Casting # 4501851. This had a 93 or 94 casting date (Mexican casting). Instead of Mahle pistons, this motor had some very cheap looking cast pistons with made in Mexico cast into them. It also had the notches in the bottom of the cylinders for a 2.5 application. If I remember correctly, it was about an extra $400 over a standard TI block. Had steel crank, yet LW rods in it! This is same block that Rob M. (Shadow) runs. Sort of felt ripped off that I received what amounted to half a TII. I guess my point is not sure the NOS short and long blocks are the same quality and what went into the production vehicles.

Well SRT blocks are made in mexico in the first place! I guess that solves part of that problem...haha.
