having hard time installing gear shift tower a523/543 1993

i have the fsm and for this and everything but i cant for the life of me get the damn housing back ontop of the trans

the trans is currently installed in the car. All four springs and those roller detent things are installed, i use the lock pin to lock the housing in N but everytime i bolt it on, the 1st-2nd "lug" either moves into first or second and must be jamming the shifter because i cannot put it into any gear.

fsm says the inhibitor must be inline with the lugs and i do that... is there any tricks i should know about? Im getting really worked up about this

It can be a b**ch sometimes... all it takes is just the slightest bump or sideways movement when putting it back together and you bump one of the lugs just slightly enough to move it and move the inhibitor. Because the inhibitor does not actually sit down inside very far inside the 'channel' formed by the three lugs/gates it can and will get c0ckced sideways like its happening to you. I have had them drop right together the first try and other times it takes 3 or 4 or 5 or 15 tries to get it right..... your fighting the springs wanting to push it sideways and not having a direct drop down installation because the transmission mount kinda overhangs the area. I guess also though make sure the detent rollers are not turned 90* cause that will jam it up also.

thanks. i figured it out shortly after posting.. go figure.

it was the 3-4th detent roller having a problem but i also was bumping the lugs... its fine now though

    thanks
