There are a number of reasons, the leading one is that some folks cannot get Friday off to travel to the event. Showing up on Saturday morning at the motel and going over there in the afternoon will probably be too late.
Now if the question you asked was, Why wouldn't anyone WANT to do this? I agree 100%.

I sure wish I was heading to SDAC, I cant. I even thought about flying just to be there, but not going to work out.
