It's ideal if you wanna bore and stroke the motor to about 3.8L or so and use 2 of them

    Turbo calc is hyar...

can anyone explain what I am looking for? I am assuming the red line should be within the center of the lines most of the time?

That's what I always figgered.... though if it's to the left a bit you can run more boost... but by the time it's to the right one level, it's making a lot of heat, and probably even with a big IC you have knock issues.

---------- Post added at 09:40 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:37 AM ----------

BTW you can get away more with having it oversized, (over to the left) because look at the bottom of the graph, the flow rate will be low, so plenty of time to lose the heat in the IC... snot gonna do you any favors for mileage though.... and spool will be late...

Problem with that is, as soon as you do something to improve airflow (ie. ported heads, you are going to be over to the right...) I wouldn't go smaller than a 60 trim in the T04E hybrid.

The other thing you have to consider is the turbine wheel. On the Garrett's I wouldn't go less than a stage 2, stage 3 would be better.

    Re: 3.0L Turbo

Im sorry if some of the questions I am going to ask seem stupid.

    1. I have seen some turbos that use coolant as well as oil. What is the use of the coolant?
    2. The more air the engine uses, the more the line moves to the right?
    3. The more horsepower I want to produce would also move me to the right?
    4. I understand ideal for a 3.0L is 60 trim .63 A/R. If I moved to a .5 A/R, would I produce boost lower, and run out of air into high RPM?

Oil is a lubricant and sometimes its enough to cool the turbo BUT when you shut the motor down, the turbo temp spikes and the oil cokes, in steps water cooled turbos.

Any stock 4 cylinder turbo will be too small for a 3.0L

A/R is the turbine housing size to put it simply, so going smaller will be worse, the bigger the engine or the higher you rev it, the larger the A/R is. Our 8 valves use a stage 1 wheel with a .48 housing, it makes for a very quick spooling turbo with virtually no lag but chokes off at higher rpm, 2.5's even worse and mods compound it so a common fix was a .63 housing which helped the engine breath at the cost of a bit of lag.

    Re: 3.0L Turbo

Ok, I will keep scouring craigslist in hopes of finding a turbo cheap, as I don't see putting it in until next year, if I come accross a good one for a good price, I will grab it, otherwise just buy the CX next year.

I guess I should ask, what values should I use for the BSFC, Max I/C Loss, and Pressure Ref? Should I mess with any of this, or is it simply going to make no difference?

I know, I saw that, unfortunately that is out of the budget as suspension is the next thing to be done, 23 years has done a wonder to the factory stuff.

    Re: 3.0L Turbo

The values in the baseline turbo calc are for a very efficient motor. BSFC of .5 for a stockish motor would be more realistic. I ignore internet calculators that try to make you use huge BSFC numbers for supercharged or turbocharged motors.

The WRX turbos seem near too small from the factory for their own motor, just like almost every OEM turbo application in existence.
