    Re: almost constant backfire

At least hope it's a timing problem. Because if it isn't, it's a valve not sealing somehow, (Chipped, melted, bent etc)

    Re: almost constant backfire

If the popping noise is only when the car is in deceleration, put the cat back in or live with it.

If it is there when you accelerate as well, check your cam and ignition timing.

    Re: almost constant backfire

You have a timing light right? If not, its kinda hard to get it right if you dont have experience in doing it. '

Yeah, you turn the distributor. Also, make sure you unplug the coolant temp sensor. Like Simon said.

To get the timing belt correctly onto the cam pulley is the start.

There is three way to adjust cam timing.

    1. Adjustable cam pulley.

Remove the plastic plug on the upper timing cover, hook up timing light, pickup goes on #1, that's the one closest to the passenger side of the car, start the car, should be warm, unplug coolant sensor, check ignition timing, window is on top of the trans, if around 12 deg, then shine timing light thru the hole, you should see the oval hole in the timing gear somewhere in that hole, if you can't see it, cam timing is off.

    Re: almost constant backfire

I had the same problem around two weeks ago pluss engine was loosing power. I knew the missing cat would cause some back fireing but but it was louder than normal and more BFsPM (back fires per min ) lol made that up. I checked everything then decided to clean throttle body and reset air idle control. when I remover tps connector I found that plug pins were green. I replaced plug, reset aic and that seemed to quel BFs

But I would still check timing as stated above . Sounded like such a good idea Im gonna do that as well.http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/sh...gine-cuts-out.

    Re: almost constant backfire

If it is just a slight popping at idle then it is probably a bypassed baro.

    Re: almost constant backfire

Every one of these cars I've ever seen does it because the baro goes out and the map ends up hooked directly to the intake. When the computer looks for the atmospheric pressure through the baro it gets engine vacuum instead and that causes it to pop. At least that is what I was told.
