    Camshaft Plug 12mm?

Is the pipe plug that goes in the arse end of the T-III cams a 12mm pipe plug?

I'd like to see you and your math skillz figure out a pipe taper with dial calipers in a threaded hole.

I am. But have you ever looked at the 1/16-27 npt plug/tap before {for instance: the tap used for the balance shaft oil feel hole} and wondered what part of it could possibly be .0625"? NPT "size" doesn't refer to the major nor the minor diameter or the taper.

So a simple "yeah, that's what I used" answer would have worked best. I put in a 12mm taper plug and it only goes in 3 threads where it should be much more than that.

I haven't had one out in awhile but I dont seem to remember a taper on them. I thought it was just a short set screw. Do you have another cam you can pull to check?

    Re: Camshaft Plug 12mm?

I had some time today while waiting for help to arrive. The plug is tapered as shown in the caliper. I don't have a metric scale but I hope that helps.

What size socket does it take? What would tell us if its metric or standard.

    Re: Camshaft Plug 12mm?

those do NOT look like NPT threads......looks more like M12 x 1.5 pitch SET SCREW

Steve, you most likely had the wrong pitch tap, thats why it wont go in more then a few threads, as its trying to cross over them....

    Re: Camshaft Plug 12mm?

Thats the thing, I used a 7/32 only because I had that in a socket, but a 5.5 mm fit just as sloppy. A 6 mm or 1/4 would not fit.

It could be a set screw as I originally thought but there is a slight taper on it. It did feel like it bottomed, vs locked on the threads.

    Re: Camshaft Plug 12mm?

    Maybe it isn't a tapered plug.... I had to hurry at work as we were closing, so I went through our huge assortment of plugs, keyways, dowels, etc... and the 12mm was close. I did notice that the threads go in a long way and thought it was odd, as it wouldn't be that deep for a tapered plug. {not usually, anyways}

    Re: Camshaft Plug 12mm?

Its an M12x1.5 socket head taper pipe plug for sure as I have gotten them before from my local Fastenal. The hex size is 6mm but you have to tap it into it as they were a very cheap plug from the factory. The Fastenal version is much better quality.

    Re: Camshaft Plug 12mm?

Ahh ok, when my 6mm wrench didn't fit in it I tried the others. Didn't think I would need to tap the wrench into place.

Or aftermarket if it's a combo of both

I used to have 2 vehicles that were pretty much 99% metric... now they're about half and half due to getting 3/4 heads on stuff where they should be 18mm etc etc.
