    5x7 sealed beam headlight conversion

Is there a product out there that would convert the glass sealed beam headlight (large square) to a composite with a replaceable bulb?

I have found glass ones, but I would prefer composite construction for obvious reasons.

    Anybody find anything like that?

I've got the Hella H4 system in my GLHS. I don't know what it cost, it was in the car when I got it. I got the replacment bulbs from Summit, so they probably carry the systems too.

+1 to Rally lights. Get all my lighting from them. Make sure to relay them in. The ancient wiring in our cars as well as having to go through the switch really kills the light output. Read all the tech on Rally lights to understand them fully. Good stuff there.

+1 to the relays! Increases the light output significantly AND it makes the wiring a bit more safe!

Browse around ebay, and find the lights made by Autopal. They are a European OEM replacement type light, uses the H4 bulb, and has the nice beam pattern. I've been running them in my Trans Am and love them. When I get to that point with my SC, I'll put them in there too.

Got a buddy in the UK? Ask him to check out "Vauxhall Chevette" headlamps... because they were the UK version of the T-car Chevrolet Chevette which had the then pretty much mandatory sealed beams, so those units fit in the hole that a sealed beam fits in and they used to have slanted race/rally covers/lenses available to fair the light in... which IMO should look good on a 'page....

However... they done got old and possibly unobtainium...

And they'd be set up for driving on the wrong side of the road in which case you'd be blinding every on-coming driver.

That's usually in the adjustment... since they woulda been common to german Kadetts as well.

The autopal lights are set up for driving on the right side of the road. The beam pattern flicks up on the right side to illuminate street signs. Other lights may flick up on the left side from Europe.

No as Tbird stated RHD lighting is different than LHD. RHD goes like this _/ and LHD is \_ So like I said you'll blind the ---- out of everyone looking like some Ricer with JDM lighting in the front.

Thanks for the replys. The autopal lights all seem to have a glass lens, which I don't want. The hella ones look to be the ticket.

And +4 on installing a relay.

Might not hurt to get some of the ceramic connectors for the lights as well. The factory sockets on my GLHS are pretty scorched and will need to be replaced.

Okay, I'm up to speed now, what I wasn't realising is that on two cars I had in the UK that I remember much to do with the headlights, a Fiat and a Renault, they both had a lever on the back to flip the internal deflector, I wasn't realising that not all headlamps have this, some have it fixed, some have it not fixed, but more work to turn around...

But anyhoo, LHD Kadett Cs would have had it set up right.... but just noticed they had a different front end treatment without the same angle on the nose that the UK Chevette had so, may not be as suitable, or the same shape...

I bought the Hella's from rallylights and the lens is glass.

Glass lenses are better as they don't scratch or oxidize.

I would like to avoid having to change them due to breakage from rocks. Seems like around here glass headlights are prone to being broken quite a bit, (as with windshields). The fog lights on my 06 Dodge are glass.

If the Hellas are glass as well, then the options are limited. At least the autopals are quite a bit cheaper, so a bulk buy might be in order.

Fwiw, I've never had glass chip. Rather have it than plastic. Maybe ebay ones come in plastic.
