what else they gonna do, concentrate warehousing on the west coast and piss off east coasters or vice versa? Maybe they should go to Nome for low taxes, and just charge everyone in the lower 48 high shipping to be fair.

I believe amazon does some shipping between warehouses when you request group into minimum number of shipments...

    amazon.com....

Last week I tried to order 2 wheel hub assemblies from them, along with a set of brake pads and assorted other parts for a front end rebuild. I tried to add a pair of ball joints to the order and it went from 1 location to 5... deleted 1 ball joint from the order and it went down to 3, deleted the other and it went back to 1. I ended up cancelling the hubs and getting them from Amazon for the same price and flat $10 shipping and playing with the rest of the cart to get shipping within a reasonable level.

Dont bother calling cause you'll just get the same canned responce about choosing a different part which isnt always possible or desirable.

    Re: Your shipping...

Went to order Rancho shocks for a Dakota...3 from one warehouse, one from a different warehouse. Added another shipping charge for the "loner" shock, so I started looking around.

Ended-up I bought 'em from 4 wheel parts for a little less and free shipping.

I still buy a lot of parts from RA, but that goofy shipping costs them my business regularly.

Had an instance lately, was going to order ball joints at 6 bucks a piece. I added one and went to the cart to find 6 dollar shipping, I then made the quantity 2 and the shipping doubled. Everything I added increased the shipping by at least 6 bucks. Why no discount for throwing everything in one box.

    Re: Your shipping...

I have found RA is only good if you need 1 or 2 items. Once you get more than that, the shipping games begin. And believe me, they are games.

I dont remember exactly what I was ordering, but it was 5 or 6 parts I needed during the motor swap in my SL. I had 4 parts in my cart, and they all shipped from the same warehouse. Once I added the 5th part, 3 of my 5 items now shipped from different warehouses. That made no sense to me at all, so I pulled the first part out of my cart and we were back to all shipping from the same warehouse. So, at that point I was pretty sure every part I wanted was in fact in the same warehouse. I suppose there is a slim chance in HELL they have 5 warehouses and each of them had 4 of the 5 SKUs I needed (all different combinations). To me it seemed more like they were just trying to milk me for some shipping charges though.

I ended up ordering a few of the parts elsewhere just because RA annoyed me. I still order small things from them. In fact, just ordered a new TPS. Well, new as in it was from 1988 and was made by Mopar in a different manufacturers box. That was a pleasant (and welcome) surprise.

Playing "devils advocate" as it were, not particularly knowing how their system is set up... but I would expect to see some behaviour that "looked like that" if they had a truly smart shipping system. The reason is, that you will eventually put numerous enough, heavy enough or large enough parts in the basket that it requires more than one package. When that happens, it would be smart of it to allocate parts such as were available to a nearer warehouse, since the shipment was going to be split anyway, even if that nearer warehouse didn't have the full order.

    Re: Your shipping...

^^ Actually you are right and wrong......I used to sell automated shipping software. If you've ever noticed when you go to USPS,FEdex,UPS... they ALWAYS give you to most expensive shipping option first, but I've ordered from RA and have noticed they charge by item numbers, not weight. For example go to any shippers website and input a box size that will hold 10 sensors, if the sensor weighs .5 oz the actually cost will only increase for the actuall wgt, b/c all the shippers charge DIM wgt now(dimensional size of the package). So the same should be applied in RA's case. That's why I only buy a few things at a time from RA.

Yah, parts that have a heck of a lot of manufacturer packaging, i.e. "air" around them in the box, will tend to push up shipping disproportionately due to the volumetric weight thing.

Of course that is one possible explanation... but I was ordering SMALL parts. 3 of my 5 items were belts (timing, alt, ps). Then I had a head gasket and head bolts. Not exactly large or heavy items. At least that is what I am pretty sure I was trying to order at the time.
