So much for having fewer cars around here...
It look straight enough.. Drivers side pan has some rust.. but this thing is about as Original/stock as I have seen one in years.. All the vac lines.. ect...
Hasn't run in 5 something years... The story is the shifter rods broke/popped off.. and it was parked..
It turns over... and I will swap a good tank/fuel pump in it this weekend....
Oh... and what about this oil pan? I always thought the only flat bottom pans were the balance shaft cars..
This isn't a common block? but maybe I am losing my mind... It has been a while since I have messed with pre common block stuff...
The last time I helped a guy with a problem like that I hardly slept for a week. The paint looks great IMO though...
Very cool! You'll probably have it on the road before mine is.
yep.. Give me till monday..
this should buff right out...
lol, nice...

Ok... Just to make sure I earn my keep around here... Clearly just by looking at the fuel pump ya'll must have known I was looking at a VERY nasty gas tank...
I cleaned this baby is about 20 minutes...
Here ... some before and after pictures.. Then I will tell you the secret..
Before....
After...
Ok..
Rinsed the tank with water... Threw some larger nuts in there and shook them around a few minutes... (plug holes with Big Sponges)
Then.... WORKS toilet bowl cleaner...
This stuff..
I just had a splash of water left in the tank left from rinsing all the big stuff the nuts knocked loose outa there... So I just left it and added a bottle.. This time wrapping a ziplock bag over the sponges before using them to seal the hole (gota keep the good stuff all in until we are ready to let it out..)
Shook it around.. Let it set a few minutes.. Shook again... Took a break.. ate a samich..
Rinsed it out.. and done.. a little rubbing alcohol to dry up the water... Then the red you see is tranny fluid to prevent any possible rusting should I not have been able to get the tank back in place tonight...
I knew you would like that
Oh.. And it runs..
After it burned up the preventitive Oil I sprayed in the clylinders.. No smoke.. No funny noises.. Just smooth as silk.. Still need to do a compression test.. but didn't see a bunch of blowby or anything weird.. Let it run for 35 minutes in the shop.. It really sounds good..
Not bad for the first time running in God knows how long...
Hopefully I can make some time to do a Hiem conversion so I can take it for a ride..
Only one thing has me worried...
I owned a Black 89 Shelby daytona once.. The last three of the VIN.. well you guessed it.. and that car WAS evil.. and not in a good way...
Wow, I've never heard of using The Works to clean out a gas tank before. That's pretty amazing. Congrats on getting it up and running too! I'm kind of envious...
Amazing is what I thought too!! I have heard of guys using the stuff for years and never tried it.. Heck I have tried all kinds of things.. various types of acid and whatnot...
This was by far the worst gas tank I had ever even thought about trying to save.. Honestly I figured it hopeless.. and I had a tank on the shelf pretty much ready to go.. but what the heck right? why not give it a go...
Glad I tried it for sure..
Nice find! And good advice on the gas tank cleaning (going to put this tip to good use when I drag home my "new" 87 Shelby Z this weekend that's been sitting for 10 years).
Nice to see another '87 GLHS come out of hiding.
POR 15 make a good gas tank restoration kit. Includes a cleaner, rust remover and sealer.
I have one more L Body linkage kit in stock...
http://www.greatlakeshotrod.com/Great_Lakes_Hot_Rods/L-Body_Shifter_Kits_For_Sale.html
I might take ya up on that shift linkage kit. I have enough heim joints around here.. but I like the ends you have.. and buying them from you makes life easy.. The joint that was broken was the one on the rod that goes to the shifter, so for now I just put a Hiem on that one and moved on..
I did take it for a drive
Needs a clutch cable and some of the rubber in the brake system replaced.. and still isn't up to full power yet (not like I had much oppurtunity to find out)
It idles smooth as butter.. just has a hesitation or two..
But it can at least move under its own power...
Sounds like it's ready for SDAC!
